when does the commander tax start applying? if i let mine go to the grave and am able to cast it from there, do i have to pay the extra ?

The commander tax only applies if you're casting it from the command zone. If you're casting it from anywhere else (your hand, your graveyard, etc) you don't have to pay the tax.

You only have to pay the tax if you're casting it from the command zone, and the tax is 2*n, where n is the number of times you've previously cast it from the command zone.

As such, if you cast the card from the graveyard you won't have to pay the tax, and it won't affect the cost of future command-zone casts.
