I think you're just going about using Puzzle Box the wrong way. Puzzle Box + cards that punish people for drawing cards is a very fast way to tally up damage with Howling Mine and Font of Mythos . I've found Underworld Dreams and Spiteful Visions play very well with Puzzle Box. You could very easily manage a deck like that in mono-Black. I splash a little Red for Quest for Pure Flame . It charges up quickly with Puzzle Box forcing more cards drawn every turn, and after 4 pokes from Dreams or Visions, you can pop it if there's still enough triggers left from draws for lethal. Otherwise you just pop it the next turn and they just loose. The main trick is how you resolve the triggers. You want them to draw all their cards off of Mines/Mythos first, then have them draw off Puzzle Box. This way you get to double up on the draws off Mines/Mythos. The combo usually goes off so fast, you only have to worry about your opponenet if they're playing Burn or some other combo deck that can go off quickly. And in that event, Puzzle Box usually disrupts what ever plans a combo deck might have. So really, you only have to worry about Burn.

Anubuss is spot on - Underworld Dreams LOVES the Puzzle Box (with or without Sunder and Wheel and Deal ... or a Bubbling Muck and Dark Ritual fueled Prosperity !). I pilot a BU Puzzle Box in MP games that wins regularly. While it used to do the Prosperity thing mentioned above, I ended up preferring Sunder and Wash Out to ensure full hands. Cheers!

I always felt that the Underworld -kinda-way of exploiting the card-drawing mechanism leaves too much space for my opponent to develop his game. I damage them my way, but allow them, every turn, to choose the best card of a new hand to damage me. We both get to play to our strengths, just under different conditions, which feels like a coinflip to me. Obviously, if I use Breathstealer's Crypt or Psychic Possession , I need one more step to get out damage-dealers. But that buys me more control over the game. Is it worth it? I am not sure, actually. I should really try both versions of a Box-deck against similar opponents to find out. I guess, I'll come back here with a -based version of this soon. Care to discuss my rationale in the meantime? (BTW: One perfect addition for your versions would be Kederekt Parasite .)

Parasite would require a lot more Red permanents so it can always be on when you play it. Even in my version (Diabolical Box, it should be around here somewhere, I don't think I used it, just not enough support). Yes, you care giving them a fresh hand with Puzzle Box, and with more draw effects you're giving them a lot of cards to look at, but they can't always play all of them. Again, in my version I used some other methodes of Ramp ( Dark Ritual and Cabal Coffers + Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth ). I could pretty consistently get a kill on or before turn 5 without a nutz draw. I didn't exactly give them time to develope too much. The turn I dropped a Puzzle Box was usually the turn I won.
