Here is the thing though, there are no "common" mistakes. If there was, it would just making something that's sadly overpowered. That's where everyone starts out. They make things that are SUPERoverpowered. Magic development though is a very complex and intricate thing, everything is technical and when it comes to what to do and what not to do, there are about a million rules you have to learn from experience. There are rules for every single different operation and interaction. People like me can try to teach you by example, but even so, you won't understand it as well as you need to until you've experienced it yourself.

I think a misunderstanding of power levels or gameplay can lead to underpowered cards just as often as overpowered cards though (I remember one of my early cards, an Aura for that said "Enchanted creature loses all creature types", because it'd be awesome against those pesky tribal decks...).  People who consistently create overpowered cards usually do it because they're misunderstanding what attracts people to Magic rather than not understanding the complexities of gameplay.  It's the "Mary Sue" complex you see a lot in fanfiction (or even original fiction sometimes), where people don't care about the story or the characters of their favorite books or movies, they just want to live out their fantasy of going to Hogwarts or serving on the USS Enterprise (or just going on cool adventures in a world of their own creation).  There are a lot of people who don't care about the metagame or the interactions of cards, they just want to enjoy the fantasy of windmill-slamming awesome cards and winning games.

And yes, there are lots of common mistakes.  Color-pie issues, non-interactivity issues, memory issues, rarity issues (mostly in sets) and so on are incredibly common, even among experienced designers.

If you would read my design notes and highlights, you could learn everything you need to know.

It's a ton of reading though, and you don't have to start from the beginning. You could pick up at my new "Best of" series. It starts with Best of Bloodlines — Artifacts I.

Yes, indeed, Kevin here is very knowledgeable about what not to do.

Oh, another common mistake: Putting all your ideas on one card. We like synergy here in YMTC, and just putting things on just because kinda goes away from that. Be careful about flavor too. Putting an anti-vampire clause in Raging River would add flavor, but the card itself is already ridiculously complicated.

Clever deduction Watson! Maybe you can explain why Supergirl is trying to kill me.

GM reminded me of another mistake which shows up from time to time.

"Gains all abilities of X" is a rules nightmare. "Gains all activated abilities of X" is the correct implementation, as seen on Experiment Kraj , Necrotic Ooze , and Dark Impostor .

I concur. That's impossible. Cats must be lying (felines are known for this).

It's like... alternating. GM derails a thread and starts spouting nonsense, then someone talks to him and one of them gets suspended, which seems to be based on whether GM got suspended the last time or not.

Okay, here is the clincher. I've been waiting to say this.

The "cam girl" this was inspired by was just a girl from a social networking website, Stickam. Her name was TinyTerror and she was just a regular girl who was on her webcam, totally unrelated to any type of adult content.

I hope you all feel really smart now.

This is like someone coming into class with a bloody nose and everyone's like "Jeez what happened to you" and they're like "I ran into a wall" and everyone laughs at them for being an idiot but then at the end of the class they say "HAHA JUST KIDDING I PUNCHED MYSELF IN THE FACE!!!!!! TALK ABOUT OWNED HAHAHAHAHA"

I really enjoy imagining this from Kevin's perspective. Because in Kevin's world, Rosewater actually reads everything he types. Mark is sitting there right now, reading this, and thinking "The greatest trick the devil ever pulled. . ." Or some such. He chuckles low, then clicks on "The Best Of KEVINSET" and says "Yes, this'll do just fine. A busty lady with banding who deals direct damage to Zones!? Why this will be the star of my next set, and no one will ever believe you Kevin." Then he closes his Macbook, so his servant may move it out of the way, while another servant puts a Fetal Richard Garfield Clone lathered in Steak Sauce in front of him. Then Mark Feasts.

Sorin walked into the chamber where his newly wed bride, Vampy, awaited. A beam of moonlight illuminated his brilliant silver hair as he strode with confidence towards the bed. His shirtless body showcased his powerful abdominal muscles and he was wearing jeans with holes in the knees.

That means that (since his other account was deleted!) later on today a "new" person will appear here, posting exactly the same things in exactly the same way..
