So counterspells are still viable.
I suppose in some cases. But the idea is that this card can be played in all decks, while the only real answer to him has to be played in a deck that can reliably dodge any caverns and counter him. What you're implying is that decks without thragtusk should run counterspells because removal and creatures aren't viable enough to match him, which makes good ol' swaggy a very poorly designed card.
tl;dr: him hitting the battlefield is HUGE game-changer, and can happen in any deck that throws in 6 green sources somewhere.
Cool hyperbole bro. Thragtusk is good, and is effecting the shape of the format, but it's far from mandatory- it simply hates out a few particular decks (small MonoR, Zombies etc)

second set isnt even out yet. Still missing at least half of the aggro cards, and knowing wotc they're sure to print some sort of heavy-handed Thragtusk soloution before long that we will all hate after Tusk rotates.
Knowing WOTC, it'll probably be something along the lines of "destroy target creature, it doesn't leave the battlefield, and if it was a 1/1 white spirit creature token with flying, its controller loses the game."
I don't have an egosig because I'd rather my ideas be judged on their merits than on mine. Catpoints: Spoiler:

Too true man. Remember seeing a tweet from forsythe along the lines of "we printed 13 cards to hate out lingering souls and it still got top 8 at such and such."

Thragtusk needs to go. Any creature thats a must include if you are playing that color is busted imo. They made a huge mistake in trying to tone down delver, by creating a larger one. Pretty soon most top standard decks will have to run him because he is too broken. Just ban it and lets move on.

At this point many games flat out boil down to
"Does opponent have Thragtusk?" Yes "Do you?" No.
You lose.
or
"Does opponent have Thragtusk?" Yes "Do you?" Yes "Did your opponent cast Thragtusk first?" Yes
You lose.

Except not at all.

A while back, I was listening to some guy on some tournament stream talking about the wolf run mirror. He said "Back in the valakut days, it was who got the first titan. Now it's who gets the most titans." That's definitely applicable to thragtusk. You might hit yours first, but if your opponent rites' theirs back twice, or plays another, then gets both back with AOS, they're gonna win.

Yes, your opponent playing multiple rites is probably going to win the game. I'm willing to bet that most games where they cast multiple rites for creatures, a person playing rites will win that game.
You can win through thragtusk. I've done it before. I promise, its possible.

You can win through thragtusk, that's not in question. The question is, how many thragtusks can you win through?

Indeed. I won a game where I fought through his 7 Thragtusks (rites) to my 2. Certainly an awful grindfest but doable. Though the hardest times to beat him in my opinion is when he's used in Jund, backed up by Kessig Wolf Run and Garruk Primal Hunter to gas them into even more threats. Drawing 5 cards into one or more Rakdos's Return while having two bodies to give trample to is just brutal.
