Butterside Down #8:What's that even mean? When you put butter on your toast, which way does it go into your mouth? Butterside up, followed by the grinding mastication of a cow chewing cud? Or Butterside down? Your mouth is filled with a flavour explosion, letting you savour each buttery bite as though it was ambrosia.
What? This is a flavour contest. The eighth one.
Rules?
- This contest will be open until approximately the 10th of December with grades following as soon as I can practically do it (I'll try to provide updates, even if grading is incomplete).
- Grading of each card will follow a rubric of:
- 10 points for wording issues. Autoinclude of 10 points here, with points taken off for the aforementioned issues.
- 40 points for mechanical issues, be it cost, colour, balance, rules problems, what have you.
- If you submit a vanilla / french vanilla card, this grade will be out of 20 points.
- A whoppingly enormous 50 points for flavour. This includes name, f-text (note: this is still entirely optional - some of the most flavourful cards in Magic have no flavour text), 'card as a whole' feel and how well your card matches your cycle.
- If you submit a vanilla / french vanilla card, this grade will be out of 70 points.
What cycle? So - your task in this contest is to produce a whopping five card cycle to impress me with. The cycle can be vertical, horizontal, show story progression, character progression, I don't care but make them relevant to each other. The only one I won't accept is a mechanical cycle where the cards have nothing in common except their mechanics work well together. Give me a short (short!) sentence or two describing your cycle if you like. This is after all - a flavour contest. And I'm hungry. Butterside FAQ
Show
So you kept the scoring system from the second contest? Sure did. Given that I made what was apparently a highly inflammatory remark about vanillas, I got some strong submissions from those with no text in their boxes, so the 70 points possible for maximum flavour stays for these cards - but be warned - I will judge cards presented solely on flavour very harshly!
Anything else? Well - no. There's a fair few contests around based on restrictions (which is good by the way), but as this contest is primarily based on flavour, there are no restrictions. I will note though, that this is still a YMtC contest, so if you submit a vanilla creature you'd better be damn good at writing flavour text.
Who won the first seven? The first contest was won by JohnnyValdez, while the second was taken out by Mata_Hari in her guise as Dr_Kraid.The third was also won by Mata_Hari, and the fourth was an honorary butterside, given to JohnnyValdez again for this cool cycle of cards. Joining this illustrious pair by winning the fifth contest was razorborne, presenting 5 cards of a 14 card pyramid cycle (let's not do that again). The sixth was taken out by DrJWilson, with Elevate getting the seventh as an honorary for his fixed entry to Butterside #6. Additional

I should mention that for some reason I will give your cycle a completely unfunny, potentially pun based name. You have been warned.
Also, I wasn't lying about by popular request - thanks to those who PM'd me about running another one of these and allowing me to recover after worlds.

Thank you for revealing a whole new way of eating toast to me. No longer will I chew the cud now that I know the path to ambrosia. I thought about using my "sudden" cycle, but I already posted those on the forums before. Instead I present the cycle of Zahl (under construction) Keeper ven-Zahl Creature - Human Cleric [u] Defender At the beginning of each opponent’s upkeep that player gains two life. “I maintain the rituals to restrain the Sealed One lest they fail and he escape”1/4 Observer ven-Zahl Creature - Human Wizard [u] Unblockable At the beginning of each opponent’s upkeep that player draws a card. “I study the Sealed One to arm us all lest he escape”2/1 Assailer ven-Zahl Creature - Human Warior [u] Haste At the Beginning of each opponent’s upkeep that player may have ~ deal one damage to another target creature or player. “I train in fighting the Sealed One to combat him lest he ever escape”2/1 Gardener ven-Zahl Creature - Human Druid [u] Trample At the beginning of each opponent’s upkeep put a 1/1 Saproling creature onto the battlefield under his or her control. “I work to undo the devastation of the Sealed One so the world may survive lest he escape”2/2 and lastly: Zahl, the Betrayer Unsealed Legendary Creatue - Demon [m] Flying, trample, haste During your upkeep target opponent gains control of a creature you control. "You, I shall kill. The ones responsible for binding me here I shall find a more apropriate fate for." 7/7 By all means tell me what you guys think. I'm going way out on a limb with this one and I'm not sure howbest to deliver on what I'm trying to do.

Story cycle with so much text that it probably would never fit on an actual card. Urgent Conscription - Instant Cast ~ only if you do not control any non-token creature. Put X 1/1 white Soldier creature tokens onto the battlefield. 'When those army boys came knocking on our door, I knew instantly that the rumors of the imperial battalion's defeat was true. They were not here looking for an army to defeat the enemy, but cannon fodder to buy them time. Even as I write this, I still remember my daughter's tears as she asked where her Daddy was going.' - A Soldier's Diary.Letter - Artifact When ~ enters the battlefield, you gain 4 life. At the beginning of each end step, if you do not control any creature, sacrifice ~ and draw a card. "The fighting had just gotten even worse, my love but worry not, I will be fine. I miss the old days where you, me and our little Cecilia would sit under the pine trees and eat your delicious apple pies. One day, we shall do that again when all of this fighting is done. I will return, I promise. Stay safe." - Samuel, your loving husband and doting father of Cecilia.Warring Fields - Enchantment Creatures get +2/+0, has vigilance and must attack each turn if able. Whenever a creature deals combat damage to a player, that player sacrifices a permanent and put a 1/1 white solider creature token onto the battlefield under his or her control. "We fought valiantly, we fought furiously and we would have fought to the last man if need be but we fought not for victory. We fought for survival. We fought for the right to return home." - Recount, Days at WarFinal Strike - Sorcery Cast ~ only if you control the least number of creatures among all players. (If an opponent controls the same number of creatures as you, it still counts as the least.)Creatures you control gets +7/+0 until end of turn. At the beginning of the end step, you lose the game. "Even as we raised our swords in these final moments, thoughts of home swelled within us. We might never see our families again. I might never hear my daughter again. But the chance that we will again is more than worth fighting for. We will not lose." - Samuel, Peasant HeroFaithful Yearning - Enchantment When ~ enters the battlefield, exile a creature card from your hand and draw a card. Sacrifice ~: Put a creature card that shares the same name as the exiled card from your hand onto the battlefield. She still waits under the pine trees for his return.

Well, you don't have to. Otherwise I'd have a lot of entries, yes?
