So if MUD is a popular vintage deck for competitive play, does that mean that two MUD decks play against each other very often? If so, then it seems like the chances of winning are 50/50 and therefore make that match completely unfair and irelevant.
Welcome to Vintage play.
You fell victim to one of the classic blunders - The most famous of which is "never get involved in an thread with GM_Champion" - but only slightly less well-known is this: "Never go in against AzureShade when card design is on the line!

I've always frowned upon competitive card games, because there's always way too much luck involved. However, this is plain dumb.

Well, my earlier quip was a bit unfair. While the match-up looks like a 50/50 luck based split, it's much more skewed towards the skill of the deck pilots. That said, I prefer the Legacy environment where things are a lot less degenerate and there are many more viable deck archetypes to choose from and a lot of variety within those archetypes. The Modern format is similar and has a bit more diversity because Wizards has made a point to ban anything that would facilitate the game ending before the third turn or so.
Think of Vintage like a shoot out at high noon. Both cowboys have guns that can kill each other, but only the guy skilled enough to draw fast and shoot straight will win the duel.

The reason MUD is so degenerate is because of Workshop. Not even Lotus / Moxen can make it that consistent. The reason it works is because of tax mechanics. It just flat-out hates all other decks.
That said, MUD fares fairly well against other MUD because the variance in archetype. If I were playing Stax MUD I may fare well against Aggro-MUD, since we'll both use Lodestone Golem.

slash panther is crazy sexy. luckily after investing so much i dont really have to bat an eyelash if i need to pick up a couple hundred bucks of new "it" cards, since they are easy to trade for.
I wouldn't mind having a MUD match up vs you. Help me learn the meta. I need practice.
