Np Garet, like I mentioned, it is really only going to affect you playing vs. it for the first portion of voting.  As far as the 2nd part, it is a openly free choice of whether or not you want to play with your decks.  So voting won't hurt if you wanna vote yes and then as Shin did "when im ready to run the decks".

Wel, I don't know if I'll have the time to unlock them all or not, but I'll have to vote yes and "when I'm ready" if that's possible. Wicked pumped about both these decks.

To add new decks my vote is: yes.
To add new decks to my deck pool my vote is: no.

Reason for it is, I'm not sure that I'll purchase them right away and or unlock them fast enough.

"when ready" is an option.  It looks like this will pass (not set in stone yet though), so when you are ready just post or send me a msg via steam and I will add a "*" next to your name in the participants list to verify you are someone who wants the new decks in your random roll (look for the "*" as well in case I missed you).  Obviously no one will be ready  before Dec. 5th, lol.  So just say when and it will be an option when you want it to be.

Drogo defeats BLS 2-0.

Game 1:   My Goblins vs. his Chandra

I go first and have a pretty sexy hand; 3 mtn, Bushwacker, Warchief, Chieftan, Krenko.     The Warchief dies but the Chieftan and Wacker get in for damage and then Krenko next turn with Chieftan in play gets in quite a bit more.   A Chain Reaction clears the board but I follow up with Krenko's command, Clickslither and another Chieftan to get the last damage through.   My deck gave me nothing but hits in that game.

Game 2:  My Ajani vs. his Rakdos.

I had another pretty good hand but he was colour screwed with no black until turn 5 (maybe 6?) so it may not have mattered.    I drop a stream of weenies starting with 2 Soul Wardens and the only spell he can play is an Ashenmoor Cougar that can't possibly race the life I get from double soul warden and a bunch of knights and 2/2 flyers.   I just keep swinging with weenies for the win.

Too bad about BLS' mana screw in game 2 but ggs.

Paranon defeats Tecnotronics 2-1

Game 1: Jace (Paranon) vs Garruk (Tecnotronics)
I got a solid opening hand of Hedron Crab , Dreamborn Muse , and Body Double .  Started the mill rolling with the crab into a Tome Scour .  Tecno played a  Lightning Greaves and I started to worry.  I really started getting spooked when a 2/2  Primordial Hydra dropped down and put on the boots while I was tapped out after playing the Muse.  It's a race!  Who will win: Mill or the Ever-Growing Hydra?!  I continued hitting my land drops and the tag team of Muse and Crab kept milling, and I was able to Body Double a Rampaging Baloths , thus ensuring I had some chump blockers to hold off Tecno.  By the time the Hydra was big enough to really be a threat he was a turn away from a mill death.  He dropped... something big and green and mean, and swapped the Greaves to it as a last ditch attack--and that left the Hydra open to .  Game 1 went to Paranon.

Game 2: Azorius (Paranon) vs Golgari (Tecnotronics)
Not much to say about this game.  I mulliganed low and apparently developed an allergy to lands, but that's how it goes sometimes.  The trio of Viridian Emissary , Yavimaya Elder , and Troll Ascetic smashed my face in pretty handily.  Game 2 went to Tecnotronics.

Game 3: Liliana (Paranon) vs Simic (Tecnotronics)
This was by far the best game of the series with a lot of close back and forth.  Tecno opened with 2x Gaea's Skyfolk while I invited a Nantuko Shade and Liliana's Specter to join the party.  Bit of a back and forth until Phyrexian Obliterator drops by... and is promptly hit with Aether Mutation .  Now my lone Shade is facing a swarm of tokens and a couple of Tecno's other assorted minions.  Tecno has 2 cards in hand and I'm at 10 life, he's at 15.  I decide now's a good time to wipe the board with Mutilate , so I do that and then drop a second onto an empty field.  Next turn, Aether Mutation #2 on the Shade.  I topdeck a Massacre Wurm and shake my head saying, "Why weren't you here last turn?" and drop him to kill the pair of tokens.   Fable of Wolf and Owl hits the table and the Wurm swings in to bring Tecno to 5.  Now I'm debating what to play next: the Shade, the Obliterator, or Dread .  I decide to go with Dread so that Fear will get me the kill even if Fable brings in a swarm.  Wurm attacks and is chumped, but still brings him to 3.  Next turn, Aether Mutation #3 bounces Dread and fills the board with tokens.  If only I'd not played anything!  Hindsight!  Alas!  Fearful of more shenaniganery, I play it safe and drop the Shade while keeping mana open for Tendrils of Corruption .  Nothing happens so I swing in with the Wurm and Shade, who are blocked, but the chumps die and the Wurm does his thing.  Game 3 goes to Paranon.

Awesome games, Tecno!  Lot of fun.
Flag Forsy November 30, 2012 4:43 PM PST
Paranon defeats Tecnotronics 2-1

Pack Instinct vs Dream Puppets - Paranon wins
Paranon played a speed mill variant, and quite well.  His cards went from Hedron Crab , to Dreamborn Muse , to Body Double .  When the game was young, I played Lightning Greaves and waited to play a Primordial Hydra around a possible counterspell, so it got out a turn late.  Later, I had Predatory Rampage countered, a swift move designed to win or draw out that counter.  At the end of the game I still had 2 Primal Surge, 2 Prey Upon, and more stuff!  So much power, but he just curved PERFECTLY! into the victory.  Into the Roil sealed the deal.

Sepulchural Strength vs Aura Servants - Tecnotronics wins
Bad beat here.  All that Paranon got out all game were 2 islands and an Invisible Stalker .  I think I would have won anyways though muhaha, as my hand was AMAZING!

Sky and Scale vs Obedient Dead - Paranon wins
Power, power, power.  I had 3 Aether Mutation that saw play, versus Nantuko Shade , Phyrexian Obliterator , Mutilate , and Massacre Wurm .  Paranon flat out got the two cards he needed to win versus my hand, that Mutilate and Massacre Wurm rocked me hands down.

Great games, and I have LOVED playing in this tournament!  Good players, and great fun so I'm sad to be out.  The random aspect is amazing, because it really gets you thinking about decks, and changing them around quite a lot for potential!
Flag minddrifter November 30, 2012 6:18 PM PST

Once that vote fails, I will decide if I want to use them myself.

Don't get me wrong -  I like the new decks, and will purchase them first day.  It's just this would mean having to rush the unlocks, and I'm not convinced I want to.   I already have a self-imposed release-day deadline to update my tracking spreadsheet!

Someone showed me the link, yes it was me.    I was playing against random people with Ajani to practice for this tournament.    I had no idea he was recording it.    Funny how he is bitching about always having to play against the life gain deck considering it is probably the deck I play the least in the entire game.   I was playing it to try and get a feel for it because I use it so rarely.

Anyway, yes I had brutal draws, I was horribly mana flooded both games if I recall although in the second game once the Knight of Infamy hits it is pretty much over barring Day of Judgement anyway.

Don't worry I have found time to plot your demise also!

Or give em a hard deadline and eliminate both if they can't arrange a match by end of week or something.

Or both.

It was a hard loss. Drogo DREW ALL THE THINGS in both games. Game 1 was his Crosswinds vs. my Obedient Dead. Future Sight was had, Bribery was had with Griselbrand , and Drogo laughed off my turn 5 Phyrexian Obliterator , took 4 turns in a row with 1 Twincasted Time Warp and a second Time Warp on the following turn. Then 9 mana with a kicked you-know-what.

Game 2 was his Chandra's Playhouse vs. my Selesnya-nya-nya-nya. Chandra burned my face until there was no face to be had. I think Chandra's Spitfire did a billion damage, but it was hard to see through the flames.

Beware this Drogo. That's my advice going forward to all others.

Garren_Windspear defeats Kupo Trooper 2-1

Kablam! Wasn't even close! Well sorta...but not really. Yes. No. Maybe. Sorry my summary will be rather brief this time around, I stayed up late to be able to catch Garren for this match after so many people had ants in their pants about the tourney moving onward =P

Duel 1: Obedient Dead (Garren) vs Exalted Darkness (Me)

Playing a deck I hate, but not as much as some. A fairly balanced duel, with no one getting particularly unlucky though Garren drew a nice mana curve and many of his best bombs ( Grave Titan , Corrupt and Dread ) and loads of removal. I got out an early No Mercy which slowed my opponent down but obviously with Corrupt in his hand all he had to do was wait, and after destroying every single creature I played there was little more that needed to be done!

Duel 2: Sepulchural Strength (Garren) vs Crosswinds (Me)

Ahh my favourite deck. One out of three ain't bad. And Crosswinds didn't disappoint... Future Sight won me the duel as it usually does (which further reinforces my points made in the Crosswinds thread...I'd NEVER take out a Future Sight). I don't know the treats SS has in store that well but Garren once again drew a good mana curve and balance, sent out some midrange threats but by the time he got his game on I was getting insane card advantage thanks to FS and Time Warps, and my 2/2 tokens from Talrand's Invocation stalled long enough for me to gain absolute control. Not sure if my opponent drew into the best things his deck was capable of this time around.

Duel 3: Exalted Darkness (Garren) vs Boros (Me)

Oh God this deck is so bad. A little confession...I've never played it before ^^; I actually quit out of the game to buy the deck unlock key, something I really didn't want to have to do but hey screw the rules I have money! But yeah, it's just as bad as most people say...not that it would have made much different in this duel even it was the best constructed deck in the game.

Garren pretty much drew the perfect game. Two 2/1 exalted creatures and the exalted land enabled a strong offensive early game (oh did I mention one of the 2/1s had PROTECTION FROM WHITE? Yeah...this won the duel single handedly.), coupled with the 1/5 guy who only lets one creature attack in the mid game followed then by Debtor's Knell sealing the deal absolutely. I managed to survive longer than expected thanks to drawing lots of the life gain burn cards, but it only delayed the inevitable.

------Good games Garren and thanks, I wish you the best of luck going forward!------

I'm glad that I didn't get unlucky in any of the duels this time around (not mana screwed) unlike the last match where I had terrible luck, but the deck choices for both of us were...meeeh. I had two Low Tier decks and a High/Mid Tier one, Garren had two Top Tier decks and one Low Tier...again it is the nature of randomness and I like the thrill of using decks you're not used to but I wish the game was more balanced sometimes. Still, variety > balance in my opinion, so it's all worth it.

Rawr! Til the next tourney, good luck all!! ^^

Wait I'm here don't kill the losers bracket just yet!

Garren_Windspear defeats Kupo Trooper 2-1

Game 1 - Obediant Dead (Me) vs Exalted Darkness (Kupo)
ED had a nasty tendency to place all there hopes behind a single creature and with the amount of removal at OD's disposal I was rather confidant going in. Nantuko Shade , Corrupt and two flavours of removal in the opening hand (followed shortly by Grave Titan ) just left my giddy. Nantuko Shade rushes in for early damage putting Kupo on a pretty strict timer and even though the Shade eventually fell to No Mercy it had already done enough damge for Corrupt to finish the job. It didn't help that Kupo couldn't get a monster to stick to the field for more than a single turn. Victory to me.

Game 2 - Golgari (Me) vs Crosswinds (Kupo)
While its true Golgari is a very strong deck it lacks a good anti-air defence so going up against Crosswinds could prove troubling if its began spewing forth a steady stream of Drakes. I was actually rather pleased to get an early Troll Ascetic on the field but pretty soon all it could do was run headlong into a wall of Kraken Hatchling s and Fog Bank s while Drakes tore my life points asunder. I did mange to draw Pernicious Deed to clear the field but a Twincast Time Warp hit me before I could do anything with it. Victory to Kupo.

Game 3 - Exalted Darkness (Me) vs Boros (Kupo)
I got Knight of Infamy out. Honestly at that point the game was pretty much over for Boros. At best a damage race would ensue but even then ED has much better lifegain options then Boros. As it happened Silent Arbiter stopped any notions of fairness and the Knight just rushed through for the win. Victory to me.

Overall some good, if quick, little games. Special thanks to Kupo for staying up until stupid o'clock to deal with my work schedule. Good on ya man.

Edit: Re-wrote the match reports to more accurately reflect reality.

As everyone knows, the new decks are out tomorrow...so after the current two rounds new decks are FAIR GAME.  As of right now though, I have no one marked to be using the new decks for random rolls.  So when/if you are ready, just let me know (here on this thread or via Steam, either way works for me) and the 2 new decks will be added to the randomness.

Game 2 was turn 2 Searing Blaze on Knotvine, Turn 3 Spitfire, Turn 4, Vortex, Bolt to face, swing with Spitfire, then turn 5 Flames of the Bloodhand, swing with Spitfire again for a turn 5 kill with Chandra.   Not often that happens.    Thanks for the games Sean.

Epic battles recap of Red decks (Shin Hitokiri) vs Expansion Guilds (Grunthex):

Game 1: Shin Hitokiri (Rakdos) vs Grunthex (Azorious)
Game begins with a Aven Mimeomancer for Grunthex and is answered the next turn by an Ashenmoor Liege by me. The flyer gets Empyrial Armor next turn and swings for A LOT (8 I think) of damage. I drop a teramorphic bringing me to 5 mana and Ashenmoor Liege responds by attacking for 4 (roar).  Another swing from the flyer doesn't connect due to wrecking ball. Grunt has to decide if he wants to risk 11 dmg if I play a demigod of revenge. He decides to Winds of Wrath to ensure he's not on a 2 turn clock and risk loosing even with a Pacifism.

I of course never drew a Demigod all game, and didn't even cast the Defiler of Souls that was sitting in my hand for his enchanted mono-colored dangerous creatures (Invisible stalker, Kor Spiritdancer, Aven Fleetwing) as he didn't play them either. Next turn I drop a Grave Titan which gets a pacifism, while my tokens attack for 4 more bringing Grunt to 12. Another Aven Mimeomancer is played with a Griffin Guide the next turn while I swing with both tokens to kill 1 and do 2 dmg. Afterwards I play a Single-Minded Ogre to bring Grunt to 7. I attack again next turn to bring Grunt to 5 or 4 and play Kaervek The Merciless to shut him down from casting spells while I swing for lethal a couple turns later. Game 1 SHIN

Game 2: Shin Hitokiri (Chandra) vs Grunthex (Izzet)
Always an intresting matchup!  After 3 turns I don't have a Chandra's Phoenix and nothing is played by either side. Grunt drops a turn 4 Steamcore Weird to do 2 dmg and start the burn race!!

I respond by dropping my 5th and final land of the game, and Searing Blaze the Weird while doing 3 dmg. I decide to go all or nothing and play a Sulfurix Vortex while praying his card advantage that Blue brings doesn't destroy me in the end before ending my turn. A Flames of the Firebrand vs a Prophetic Bolt and Arc Lightning later the game is extremely close at 5 health each.

I stare at the Flamebreak, Beacon of Destruction, and Searing Blaze in hand and know if I can just get that 1 more mana I can cast Flamebreak without worry of mana leak while bringing Grunthex down to 2 to let the Vortex finish him on upkeep. Heart of the cards says: NO LAND FOR YOU and I draw another Flames of the Firebrand which without that Mana doesn't help. 3 dmg for 3 mana no matter what, so I cast Flamebreak and it's expectedly mana leaked. Grunt plays Arcx Lightning on my life to bring me to 2 and we both say GG while I think I lost. Then on my upkeep I remember/realize: Untap happens before the Vortex resolves, I pause the game and cast Beacon of Destruction on his lifetotal and wait for a second Mana Leak. The Beacon of Destruction resolves before the Sulfuric Vortex can kill me to finish a fine series!!!  I was stomped by Rakdos against Boros in the fun game

Shin Hitokiri defeats Grunthex 2-0  Amazing games Grunthex and good luck in the rest of the tournament.

Garren_Windspear defeats Paranon 2-0

Game 1 - Izzet (Paranon) vs Azorius (Garren)
Not much to say.  I took a risk keeping a hand with 2 lands and a lot of solid 3 drops thinking "If I can just draw a single land I'll be golden."  By the time that land came there was an Aven Fleetwing and a enchanted up the wazoo Kor Spiritdancer swinging in to kill me.  Needless to say I shot myself in the foot not mulliganing to 6.  Game 1 went to Garren.

Game 2 - Liliana (Paranon) vs Selesnya (Garren)
A better game with some solid back and forth.   Nantuko Shade got Swords to Plowshares 'd and (I forget the name, the 2/3 that can ping flyers) pinged Liliana's Specter to death, but Garren's side was taken out with some removal.   Unfortunately the RNG Gods decided to make up for my lack of lands in the previous game by not letting me draw anything but lands this one.  I soon ran out of gas whereas Garren was able to get a Wilt-Leaf Liege equipped with a Behemoth Sledge swinging in undoing all my hard fought damage and ripping me apart.  I was finally starting to stabilize when I topdecked Dread (Yay, finally something that's not a swamp!) and took a gamble letting the Liege swing in to kill itself, bringing me to 1.  The gamble paid off because Garren had no more pump spells and Dread remained alive to block the  Silklash Spider that appeared.  Then a Novablast Wurm hit the field and I needed to topdeck removal in order to have a prayer.  Swamp!  Game 2 and the match went to Garren.

Good games, Garren, and good luck in the next round!  Also a tip of the hat to !Flush for organizing this shindig.  It's been a blast!

Garren_Windspear defeats Paranon 2-0

Game 1 - Aura Servant (Me) vs Mindstorms (Paranon)
I would like to say this win was due to my expert skills and gloriously intricate combos. I would like to say that. In truth Paranon got stuck at two lands for the vast majority of the match giving me ample time to slap auras on Kor Spiritdancer and Aven Fleetwing and just rush him for the victory.

Game 2 - Collective Might (Me) vs Obediant Dead (Paranon)
You know what? I'm actually beginning to grow fond of Collective Might. It keeps getting given to me and keeps doing me proud. It helps the Paranon was once again done in by lands (this time of the flooding variety). His Nantuko Shade got out early and managed to deal some damage and his removal kept me on my toes but in the end I had more creatures then he could remove and thanks to Behemoth Sledge my life points were just too high to allow him to put me on the defensive. Then Novablast Wurm turned up for a flashy finish.

Thanks for the games Paranon!

Winner's round 3: Me vs. Shinhitokiri!

Game 1: Me (Azorius) vs. Shin (Rakdos).

Slow start.  Turn 3 Avian Mimeomancer for me, Turn 4 I empyrial Armor it and swing for 8 over the head of Shin's turn 4 Liege.  It says bad words.  His turn 5 he swings back for 4, and then wrecking balls my beatstick on my turn.  I fear the Demigod, so I Winds the Liege on turn 5.  Unfortunately, what he has is not a demigod, but a Grave Titan.

Game 1 to Shinhitokiri.

Game 2: Me (Izzet) vs. Shin (Chandra)

I don't remember much, but turn 3 Shin makes it a race with Sulfuric Vortex.  We burn faces back and forth, and on the turn that Sulfuric Vortex would kill him... he pulls a Beacon of Destruction and casts it during upkeep.

Shinhitokiri defeats Grunthex 2-0

These were both awesome games that could have gone either way.  I'll see you in a few matches once I beat up some Flushees, Shin!    Ok, probably kidding, but thanks for the games.  Good luck!

First of all, I'd like to once again give much respect to Drogo (great friend and player), and just like in the 2hg tournament you once again had two matches in a single night.

4n0th1n9 wins 2 to 1 vs Drogo.

Game 1: Mindstorms vs Goblin Gangland!
Drogo was on the play with a turn 1 Goblin Guide and a turn 2 Goblin Arsonist , which got removed on turn 3 with Arc Lightning . Drogo keeps up the aggression with Goblin Wardriver , his Krenko's Command was countered with a Mana Leak . But it didn't stop there Warren Instigator hit the field but was removed by Prophetic Bolt giving me a second Prophetic Bolt to finally remove the Goblin Wardriver which has been eating away at my life points. Drogo cycled a Gempalm Incinerator for 0 damage to just draw. I felt safe to finally drop a Dominus of Fealty but at this point I was down to 1 life. Following turn Drogo drops a Goblin Arsonist which if I kill is enough to kill me, if I don't block it kills me. So I end up taking control of it with Dominus of Fealty swing in with the Goblin Arsonist but not the Dominus of Fealty fearing any single goblin with haste. I end up using Beacon of Destruction on the Goblin Arsonist while I still control him and burn Drogo for 1 with it. With me at 5 mana (4 mountains and 1 island) I dropped a Wand Of The Elements and made a 3/3 token from Drogo's mountain. But at last ditch effort Drogo drops a Voracious Dragon but at this point I am able to steal it with Dominus of Fealty swing in with it along with Voracious Dragon and the 3/3 elemental token followed with an Arc Lightning to seal the game. 4n0th1n9 wins.

Game 2: Chandra vs Exalted Darkness!
I was on the play and started off with Searing Blaze on Drogo's Duty-Bound Dead . Then Drogo dropped a Knight of Infamy but that met a Searing Spear . I did drop a Sulfuric Vortex and it did it's job for a few turns until Drogo played Deathbringer Liege . For some reason I panicked and didn't do the math was getting into the character I suppose (as hot headed as Chandra perhaps) I used Red Sun's Zenith to remove the Deathbringer Liege . Drogo dropped a Nefarox, Overlord of Grixis followed by Sublime Archangel and Darklit Gargoyle which was enough to overwhelm me. Drogo wins.

Game 3: Pack Instinct vs Pack Instinct!
I was on the play again started off with a Vinelasher Kudzu while Drogo played Nature's Lore and Leatherback Baloth . I played a Cultivate followed by a  Dungrove Elder and Prey Upon on Drogo's Leatherback Baloth but Drogo countered with a Primal Bellow . Drogo continued to ramp with a Cultivate and then played a Genesis Wave for 3, giving him 2 forests and Primordial Hydra went straight to the grave. While my Vinelasher Kudzu kept growing I played 2x Garruk's Companion but Drogo played Howl of the Night Pack giving him 9x 2/2 wolf tokens. What are the chances I top decked my own Howl of the Night Pack but it was only for 7x 2/2 wolf tokens if I remember correct? The game went to a stall, Drogo playing lands and top decking Vorapede , while I top decked: Master of the Wild Hunt along with Chameleon Colossus and my own Vorapede . After massive token swings back and forth and me finally removing that turn 3 Leatherback Baloth , Drogo played a second Howl of the Night Pack and made his last swing, I was able to block enough to live, but he played Prey Upon to finish off my Chameleon Colossus . I stay alive with 2 points of life and swing in for the kill. Drogo was off a little bit on the count. 4n0th1n9 wins.

Excellent plays, loved the mirror match at the end. Game one I survived with 1 life, game three I survived with 2 life. Just by that tiny bit I was able to win. Extremely close. Thanks for wishing me good luck Drogo, we still got the 2hg league ahead and maybe Sean's new tournament?

Incredibly close matches, the absolute best kind to play.   Game 1 Psycho won at 1 life, game 2 I effectively won at 1 life (I was at 9 with Vortex on table so he needed 7 damage on his turn to win.  He had 6 in his hand.).   Game 3 he won at 2 life.    All 3 games could have gone the other way if even one card was played differently.

Oh yeah I definitely agree that ED is underrated, and can pull off some amazing stuff. No deck in this game is entirely terrible unlike DOTP and 2012, which is awesome.

But saying that I've hardly ever lost against ED when using a half decent deck, it's far too reliant on fragile strategies:

1. Quick exalted rush. Sometimes this is enough to get the job done especially against the slowest decks, but it SO OFTEN almost gets there and then gets shut down when the opponent hits their stride. I've seen it more times than I can recall, I get slammed by these small exalted creatures and get really worried but the problem with the exalted mechanic (actually one of several problems) is that you only swing in with one creature. This makes that one creature incredibly susceptible to removal/bounce/one blocker.

2. Control. ED has some lovely control cards, brutal even. But it lacks any way to follow through, any solid win condition. Let's look at the other control decks: Crosswinds has RoR, Future Sight, Panoptic Mirror, Time Warp, tokens. Ancient Wilds has land destruction, bounce, overrun, bombs, possibly Wild Pair. SS has pretty much every single card as a win condition -.- OD has tonnes of very powerful bombs and burn. Born of Flame has powerful bombs (if you build it that way), burn, pumping burn + creatures. All those decks have almost if not equal stalling power as ED.

ED has...mediocre creature bombs and weenies. Basically it has some randomly placed very powerful control cards and lifegain but lacks the complete strategy.

3. Mixture of Both. Wishy washy.

I'm not at all saying it sucks, it's just a rather...underwhelming deck, especially compared to the new black/white deck. In my opinion it is bottom tier, but thankfully in 2013 the bottom tier always has a chance against the top tier. However small.

Sorry for putting this in the tourny thread, just wanted to respond before I forgot ^^ Enjoying following the tourny, some very enjoyable match reports to read!

Garet Jax wins vs Kangermu 2 - 0.

Match 1:  Rakdos (Garet Jax) vs Garruk (Kangermu).  This was a very close game.  Our life totals matched nearly step for step, turn for turn.  I reanimated a Packleader after killing it and followed up with Vexing Devil to draw an extra card.  Kangermu played a Blanchwood Armor on a Primal Huntbeast which had me on the ropes for quite a few turns.  I was able to Bitmus Blast another Packleader to cascade into a Chaos Warp which I used on the Armor.  I ended up winning with a Massacre Wurm and Hissing Iguanar comboed with a Terminate bringing life total to zero.

Match 2:  Izzet (Garet Jax) vs Liliana (Kangermu).  This match was a close match but not in terms of life total but rather competing for board position.  Every time I played a heavy hitter, it died and same with casting any of the black creatures.  I finished for the win using a Prophetic Bolt , Volcanic Geyser and Gelectrode .
Good matches Kangermu, you're an excellent player.

Garren_Windspear defeats Grunthex 2-1!

Round 1 - Crosswinds (Me) vs Aura Servants (Grunthex)
Well it was only a matter of time before I would have to face Aura Servants. Love it or hate it you can't deny the Azorius get results and with Grunthex throwing down a turn 2 Invisible Stalker followed by a steady stream of potent sparkly auras ( Daybreak Coronet ! *Shakes Fist*) it was all I could do hold on. Of course with Panoptic Mirror and Followed Footsteps in my hand and an Archaeomancer on the field all I needed to do was wait for Time Warp to turn up and victory would be mine! Yeah that didn't happen and I took a billion points of damage to the face from invisible Stalker for my trouble. Victory to Grunthex!

Round 2 - Grim Procession (Me) vs Act of War (Grunthex)
When Grunthex chose Boros I almost jumped for joy. Act of War isn't the greatest deck out there and it didn't help that I spent the previous night unlocking Grim Procession by stomping it flat. True it was being driven by an actual thinking being this time and would have the unlocks but still. A turn 2 Mourning Thrull got things of to a good start providing a steady stream of life points and it was quickly joined by a Voracious Hatchling (who was taken out by a Faith's Fetters ) and later a Divinity of Pride joined the party. Grunthex put on a decent defence but my removal took apart anything remotely shaped like a threat and soon my forces struck the final blow. Victory to Garren_Windspear!

Round 3 - Act of War (Me) vs Dream Puppets (Grunthex)
Grunthex started out strong milling me for 7 with Chancellor of the Spires and promptly Counterspell ing and Into the Roil ing my Skyknight Legionnaire 's stopping me from getting any real presence on the table for several turns. Unfortunately I was able to sneak a Glory of Warfare past him so anything I got to stick would deal a decent chunk of damage. What didn't help was when Grunthex stole a Boros Guildmage and had her swinging a Sword of Body and Mind around. Those things smart. It took two burn spells just to get rid of her. In the end it was a Skyknight Legionnaire armed to the teeth with a Scourge of the Nobilis that pushed me into a clear lead, at least until Grunthex stole it with a Mind Control . It wasn't enough however as a fully powered Rise of the Hobgoblins refilled my board and surged forward for the win. Oh also Grunthex may have done somthing hilarious but I'll leave that for him to tell. Victory for Garren_Windspear!

4n0th1n9 wins 2 to 1 vs Kangermu.

Game 1: Grim Procession vs Exalted Darkness!
Kangermu was on the play kicking things off with an Akrasan Squire , while I opened up with a Doomed Traveler . Turn two came the bane of my existence Knight of Infamy . I didn't have much besides lands floating in, while Knight of Infamy swung in for 4 damage a turn. Kangermu soon dropped a No Mercy and even a Divinity of Pride which I removed with Unmake . But as the only thing I could drop but lands was Restless Apparition , the Knight of Infamy swung in for a swift victory. A total of 5 swings with Knight of Infamy won the game. Kangermu wins.

Game 2: Mindstorms vs Act of War!
I was on the play, but the first thing to hit the field was a Skyknight Legionnaire for Kangermu and in response I played Cerebral Vortex on my self. Then on turn 4 Kangermu attempted to drop a Glory of Warfare which was stopped by my Mana Leak . A second Skyknight Legionnaire came rushing in for more damage, until I could drop a Dominus Of Fealty . I continued to let the 2x Skyknight Legionnaire go unblocked, thinking "what if he has a Lightning Helix " but that card never showed up. A turn after I dropped Dominus Of Fealty , I dropped a Wand Of The Elements and began converting Kangermu's mountains into 3/3 elemetal creatures. Kangermu didn't give up and attempted to play Scourge of the Nobilis on the Skyknight Legionnaire but I countered with a Mana Leak , he followed up with a Rise of the Hobgoblins for 2, giving him 2x 1/1 goblin tokens. I continued to work on his lands playing a Compulsive Research for more options. Soon enough there were only 2x plains left for Kangermu. An Arc Lightning dealt with one Skyknight Legionnaire and one goblin token. After playing it safe for long enough I began swinging in with the 3x 3/3 elemental tokens and Dominus Of Fealty and used Beacon Of Destruction on Kangermu's last Skyknight Legionnaire . 4n0th1n9 wins.

Game 3: Pack Instinct vs Mindstorms!
I was on the play with a turn 1 Ulvenwald Tracker , but a turn 3 Razorfin Hunter for Kangermu meant it's quick demise. A turn 3 for me brought Leatherback Baloth to the field, while Kangermu brought forth a turn 4 Gelectrode . I brought in a Vinelasher Kudzu while Razorfin Hunter was tapped, playing a forest and using a Nature's Lore to ramp Vinelasher Kudzu into a 3/3. My Leatherback Baloth continued to swing in but when I went to play another land before Vinelasher Kudzu could get it's next counter Kangermu played a Volcanic Geyser for 2 and pinged it for 1. So after another swing with the Leatherback Baloth I dropped a Chameleon Colossus . The following turn when I swing in with both: Leatherback Baloth and Chameleon Colossus , Kangermu chooses not to block. As I proceed to boost Chameleon Colossus by paying 4 mana, Kangermu responds with another Volcanic Geyser thus tapping out, and in response to that I play Primal Bellow after everything resolved, Chameleon Colossus dealt lethal with 23 power alone, not to count Leatherback Baloth . 4n0th1n9 wins.

Amazing games all together, Kangermu put up a great fight. Played safe, made the right calls and I got to face the man who took down the champ. It was an honor! I do want to quote Kangermu on the last game: "who would have thought Garruk can outplay Izzet in combat tricks?" Also thank you Kangermu for being a great sport and wishing me luck.

Flag Kangermu December 8, 2012 11:47 PM PST
Well, it was fun while it lasted. At least I got to knock off the top dog before getting the boot. That second game was real good. I thought I had a decent hand and the tools to win, but that confounded Dominus of Fealty put me in a pretty bad spot. I knew I was done when I saw that Wand of the Elements come in to take away lands just as I would have been able to cast Basandra, Battle Seraph and take care of that Dominus. Unfortunately, between all that and my propensity to try and force through plays when my opponent is pretty clearly sitting on a Mana Leak (the bane of my existence), and my fate was sealed.

And I thought I was doing okay in game 3. The Baloth was hurting and all, but I felt I could still maybe recover. Unfortunately, one tends to forget that Garruk has at least one trick up his sleeve, and in this case, it was enough :P

Look forward to polishing these decks up, and brainwashing myself to remember Mana Leak and the fact that it only costs 2 mana, not 3. Maybe then I can go all the way in the next tourny.
Flag ShinHitokiri December 9, 2012 5:39 AM PST
Sounds like fun games guys. Quick question: How exactly is Want of Elements intended to let you sac your opponent's lands? I'm confused. To my simple understanding, the cards says you create tokens by sacrificing lands, but targeting an opponent's lands is destroying as they are not your permaments to sac. Also does not state opponent on the card to allow a forced sacrifice.

I'm simply asking for better clarification and to correct my perspective if I'm wrong so I can understand this card and game better. Thank you for your help everyone!
Flag Kangermu December 9, 2012 6:07 AM PST
Using his Dominus of Fealty he would take control of my mountains every turn, then sacrifice them to his Wand of Elements while they are under his control. Not the easiest combo to get going, but obviously it can be pretty effective at times.

4n0th1ng defeated Garren_Windspear 2-1

Round 1 - Pack Instinct (Me) vs Grinning Malice (4n0th1ng)
A quick close match leaving both players battered and bruised. 4n0th1ng started out strong dropping Goblin Deathraiders and an Ashenmoor Liege to buff it up shortly thereafter. I traded a Garruk's Companion for his Deathraider and a 2nd Companion buffed up with Primal Bellow pushed through some decent damage before Preying Upon his Ashenmoor Liege . After that 4n0th1ng couldn't really regain board position until the very end of the round in which a Reanimated Heat Shimmered Ashenmoor Liege , accompanied by a Blazing Specter knocked my life down to a single point. It wasn't quite enough and my 12/12 Primordial Hydra trampled him for the win. Victory to Garren_Windspear.

Round 2 - Born of Flame (Me) vs Berserker Rage (4n0th1ng)
I guessed 4n0th1ng would use Goblins next and chose Chandra to counter him. I was wrong. It was pretty much all I could do to survive for the scant few turns I did before a buffed to the gills Rumbling Slum and Sacred Wolf overran my Phoenixs and crushed me into dust. Victory for 4n0th1ng.

Round 3 - Act of War (Me) vs Goblin Gangland (4n0th1ng)
Goblins!!! Do I need to say more? My only real hope lay on a Veteran Armorer with First Strike (provided by Rise of the Hobgoblins ). He was Shocked on turn 2. Yay.

Thanks for the matches 4n0th1ng (even if they were quick) and good luck in the next round! Don't worry about me - I'll just be here in the corner crying quietly to myself (so close the the finals!).

I'd like to also thank you for doing the write up as I had company.
It was great playing you Garren, we were both fighting our way in the underground as I said, I'll carry on for you and thank you kindly for the good luck! Oh and I'm glad to find another planechase player!

Garet Jax vs. Shin, Shin wins 2 - 0.

Match 1:  This turned out to be an epic battle between Rakdos and Orzhov.  Shin was stuck at 3 lands for awhile but once he was able to clear the board with a Damnation , it was pretty much over for me.  Excellent plays on both sides and Shin wins.

Match 2:  Shin beat me in a Lili mirror match.  It was tied for board position for awhile with both of us juggling for control and card advantage by each of using Rise from the Grave to put Shin's Demon on the battlefield to tutor a card.  Shin wins.

Yes, truly epic battles both games that had both of us in the high 20 cards left in libraries both games.

Game 1
Used castigate to exile a wrecking ball on turn 3 since I had still not drawn any land and could not afford to loose one on the field.  Garet masterfully built his board precense with a Ashenmoor Liege, Hissing Iguanar, and Grave Titan with tokens against my sole Midnight Haunting token. Finally drew that land for damnation and even though my life was at 13, the alternative was much worst   A lot of creatures, removal, blightning, reanimating pro-black/white by Garet later made the match go on for a while. I was finally able to swing in for the win after hard fought board position.

Game 2..his recap sums it up as it was a huge battle of board position and card adv with underworld dreams helping win out.

Excellent matches again sifu!

First thing's first.  I want to congratulate Shin Hitokiri, Garet Jax, and 4n0th1n9 for being the last 3 men standing.  Great job guys!

One person is in the Championship game and deserves a BIG CONGRATULATIONS!  Great job Shin!  You are the last Winner standing!!

I feel better about losing, as I lost to Shin and 4n0thin9, lol.

I have put up the last Loser's Deck List for Garet and 4n.

I have updated/upgraded the prize for the season of giving and caring.  Read the original post.  May the best Duelist win!

4n0th1n9 wins 2 to 0 vs Garet Jax.

Game 1: Aura Servants vs Born of Flame!
Garet Jax was on the play. Turn 2 I dropped a Invisible Stalker , while Garet Jax dropped a turn 3 Chandra's Phoenix and began swinging in. I dropped a turn 3 Aven Mimeomancer but didn't want to trade it for the Chandra's Phoenix . Garet Jax however played a Ruby Medallion followed by an Earthquake for 2, getting rid of the Invisible Stalker . While I was stuck on 4 mana, I played Kor Spiritdancer and Narcolepsy on Chandra's Phoenix . Garet Jax responded with a Red Sun's Zenith for 2, getting rid of Kor Spiritdancer . Still at 4 mana I dropped a Grand Arbiter Augustin IV but that met a swift demise to a Beacon of Destruction . Yet another Kor Spiritdancer hit the field and while Aven Mimeomancer was swinging unopposed they both got wiped with a Flame Wave (I have to admit, I needed to pause and read it, since I haven't played that card). Another Kor Spiritdancer and an Invisible Stalker came and again got wiped with a Flame Wave . A few turns later I drop a Sun Titan and bring back Kor Spiritdancer . But Garet Jax is still not out of fuel to burn, he plays Flamebreak and Flame Slash to finish off both Sun Titan and Kor Spiritdancer . Now he's at 4 life and I'm at 3 life. With 0 cards in hand for Garet Jax, all he needs is a single burn to win. I proceed to drop yet another Invisible Stalker and pass the turn. Garet Jax plays nothing, so as a last ditch effort I play Narcolepsy and Daybreak Coronet on my Invisible Stalker and swing in for the kill. 4n0th1n9 wins.

Game 2: Crosswinds vs Sky and Scale!
Garet Jax is on the play again, but he gets stuck at 2 lands. While I play a turn 1 Sleight of Hand , a turn 2 Azure Mage , a turn 3 Spiketail Hatchling all while Garet Jax is stuck at 2 mana. Eventually he hits a third land, but with Spiketail Hatchling on the field, his plays are limited. He drops a Winged Coatl tapping out. Here I decide to race for damage. On my turn I use Disperse on the Winged Coatl and continue swinging with the Azure Mage , and Spiketail Hatchling . Again Garet Jax not finding land, plays Winged Coatl , at this point I counter with a Cancel . As I continue putting damage through I get my Cancel back with a Call to Mind and 3 mana left open. Garet Jax attempts to play Trygon Predator but I sacrifice my Spiketail Hatchling to counter it. I draw from Azure Mage , then drop a Talrand's Invocation . Garet Jax plays his Lorescale Coatl while 2x 2/2 drake tokens swing in the air. I proceed to play Talrand, Sky Summoner and counter a Pongify with a Cancel . Now at 3 life Garet Jax goes down to the 2/2 drake tokens. 4n0th1n9 wins.

Well played Garet Jax, it was a heart pumping game one, game two we both agreed that 2 to 3 lands won't cut it. Regardless great playing you again since the 2hg tournament. Thank you for the games yet again.

Although it isn't a swiss tournament of course....and as a gambit it is actually pretty silly but whatever.

Nicely done 4n0th, not surprised though.   Having played a lot of games with/against him he sure doesn't make many mistakes (if any).

4n0th1n9 wins 2 to 0 vs Shin Hitokiri.

Game 1: Born of Flame vs Berserker Rage!
Shin Hitokiri was on the play, but the first creature to hit the field was my Chandra's Phoenix on turn 3, only to be removed by Shin Hitokiri's Branching Bolt . But on turn 4 Shin Hitokiri dropped a Rumbling Slum which I removed with a combination of: Red Sun's Zenith for 1 and Flame Slash . However Shin Hitokiri didn't stop there, turn 5 came a Deus of Calamity , I was able to deal with it through a combination of a Flamebreak and a Searing Spear . Thanks to Flamebreak I got my Chandra's Phoenix back from the graveyard and on turn 6, I played 2x Chandra's Phoenix and began swinging in for damage. Shin Hitokiri then played a Fires of Yavimaya . While I played a Hostility . That was enough to finish the game. 4n0th1n9 wins.

Game 2: Mindstorms vs Sepulchral Strength!
Shin Hitokiri was on the play, however I was the one to drop a creature first on turn 2 which was a Razorfin Hunter , forgetting to ping for 1 once a turn later. But on turn 3 Shin Hitokiri played a Mind Rot making me discard a mountain and a Conquering Manticore . But on my turn I was able to make up for the discard with a Compulsive Research . Then turn 4 came a Creakwood Liege for Shin Hitokiri who was at 3 swamps and 1 forest. In response I dropped a Gelectrode but that was removed by the swift Go For The Throat . I wasn't able to deal with the Creakwood Liege for a few turns, then Shin Hitokiri played a Viridian Emissary . I then played Act Of Treason on the Viridian Emissary attacked with it and pinged it with Razorfin Hunter giving me an extra land instead of Shin Hitokiri at the same time I used an Electrolyze to deal with the Creakwood Liege . However I was tapped out and to my surprise Shin Hitokiri played a second Creakwood Liege and swung in with the 2x 3/3 worm tokens. I was able to deal with the second Creakwood Liege on the following turn, while the worm tokens attacked I played Prophetic Bolt on the Creakwood Liege and pinged 1 token with the Razorfin Hunter . The next turn Shin Hitokiri attacked with 2x 1/1 worm tokens and as my Razorfin Hunter was pinging one of them Shin Hitokiri played Consume Strength but I used Mana Leak to stop that. At the same time I was able to play Prophetic Bolt directly. I followed up with a Dominus Of Fealty and Razorfin Hunter dealt with the last worm token. But Dominus Of Fealty was removed with a Maelstrom Pulse . Then Shin Hitokiri attempted to play Vulturous Zombie but I stopped that with another Mana Leak . Following turn another Vulturous Zombie made it to the field but was removed by my Beacon Of Destruction . I played a Compulsive Research and continued to ping Shin Hitokiri with the Razorfin Hunter directly. Eventually Shin Hitokiri dropped a Troll Ascetic but I drew my Beacon Of Destruction again and with Shin Hitokiri being at 10 life, it was a Beacon Of Destruction plus a Reverberate combo that finished the game. 4n0th1n9 wins.

Thank you Shin Hitokiri for the games. Also fun playing with you again since the 2hg tournament. We still have one more game to go. Let's give it our all.

Confirming the losses. Great games by a great player. First game I didn't draw my fires of Yavimiah one turn until after he had killed both my creatures which made it too late by then LOL   Great job game 1 taking out a 5/5 and a 6/6 the following turn as I only needed to untap once with either of the creatures to win the match. Amazing job with Chandra as creatures with that toughness are not easy to take out back to back.

Game 2 I missed my second green when you tapped out early preventing me from playing the troll when I wanted to, and the Act of Treason on the Emissary was the play of the match as you got an extra land while it kept me out of range from mana leak on all my other 3 drops I was holding and kept getting countered due to being 1 mana shy   I was shocked to see that Beacon of Destruction got me at the end as you had used it on the Zombie earlier. Great games man!!  On to Round 2!!!

4n0th1n9 wins 2 to 0 vs Shin Hitokiri.

Game 1: Born of Flame vs Exalted Darkness!
I was on the play, but Shin Hitokiri after a mulligan to 5 was stuck at 1 swamp for a few turns. For me the first thing to hit the field was a Chandra's Spitfire by that time Shin Hitokiri was already at 2 swamps to my 4 mountains. As I proceed to swing in my Chandra's Spitfire gets removed by a Doom Blade . Then I tap out for an Obsidian Fireheart but on Shin Hitokiri's turn another Doom Blade removes my Obsidian Fireheart . At which point I begin to race and start with a Searing Spear directly, followed by a Blaze for 4. Both of us continue to draw lands, until Shin Hitokiri plays a Sublime Archangel which is removed by my Chandra's Outrage . Then comes a Silent Arbiter for Shin Hitokiri and for one turn he forgets to attack. Then comes an interesting set of plays: Shin Hitokiri brings forth Deathbringer Liege and I use Flame Slash to remove it, but next turn another Deathbringer Liege hits the field for Shin Hitokiri and just the same I remove this one with another Flame Slash . I then play a Chandra's Phoenix only to have it meet a third Doom Blade . A bit of drawing mana for both, Shin Hitokiri drops over a few turns a Royal Assassin and a Knight of Glory . I respond with a Flamebreak killing the Royal Assassin and Knight of Glory while bringing Silent Arbiter down to 2 toughness, I play Searing Blaze on it. Only to remember since I didn't play a land so it does 1 damage leaving the Silent Arbiter at 1. However I get my Chandra's Phoenix back and able to swing with it once, before it gets stopped by a Pillory Of The Sleepless . In the mean time Silent Arbiter receives a Whispersilk Cloak and continues to deal 1 damage a turn. But with Shin Hitokiri being at 5 life, I play Sulfuric Vortex and a Flames of the Blood Hand bringing him down to 1, so at his upkeep the Sulfuric Vortex brings him down to 0. 4n0th1n9 wins.

Game 2: Sky and Scale vs Sepulchral Strength!
I am on the play again and once more Shin Hitokiri mulligan to 6. While I open up with a turn 2 Coiling Oracle giving me a third mana on the field, Shin Hitokiri responds with a turn 2 Ravenous Rats making me discard 1 mana. We trade creatures, and on turn 3 I play a Lorescale Coatl . Shin Hitokiri unable to find land, sitting at 2 takes a hit from Lorescale Coatl and then a turn after I play another Coiling Oracle giving me a Winged Coatl . On turn 5 I play Overbeing of Myth which is a 3/3 at the time with 3 cards in hand and swing in once again with the Lorescale Coatl and Coiling Oracle . On his turn Shin Hitokiri removes my Lorescale Coatl with a Go For The Throat and calls it game, since he is out of options. My Overbeing of Myth and Coiling Oracle finish off Shin Hitokiri's remaining life points. 4n0th1n9 wins.

First and foremost I would like to thank Shin Hitokiri for being a great sport and playing through to the end, putting up a great fight in our matches and I'd wish we had a more of grand finish, but as I've said before we can always do battle any time. It's sad to see mana problems in tournaments, but it happens to all of us. We still play and never give up. That's what I saw in this tournament from all the wonderful competitors.
Now I'd like to say think you to !Flush for organizing this tournament and being with us every step of the way, I enjoyed both of your tournaments and hope there are many more to come. I know you're going to be busy after the New Years, and as a heads up, I want to wish you happy holidays and a happy New Year. When you'll come back we'll all be here waiting for another random tournament full of fun!
Special thanks goes off to Drogo who's words I remembered in regards to a Tarland play, who's helped me practice and wished me luck before and after. Of course a big thank you for all of my opponents whom I've faced; you were all wonderful players and I'm up for a rematch anytime! Those I haven't faced, we'll get our chance.
Last but not least I want to say this was an unexpected victory, but I won't complain. It was fun everyone! Happy Holidays to all!

!Flush, the host, the man who puts his blood and sweat into running these events :P okay maybe not that extreme. But as everyone else, I do too appreciate everything you do by hosting these tournaments, getting players in to interact more, to have more fun and enjoy good friendly competition. The random element we all desire is found here and that's most fun of all.

Now on to the prize, I would like to announce that I will turn down the game prize. As I have already mentioned to !Flush, to me enjoying this competition, making new friends, and becoming the championship is the best prize of all. So thank you once again and I've gotten my prize the title of champ. That's all I desire!

A true competitor!  I will save the money for a prize in the next tournament!  Maybe I'll buy a couple extra cool games on sale for dirt cheap to give away in future tournaments.  As always, sponsors are welcome!

Playing as much as I do vs. 4n in my spare time, I am not surprised to see him win it all.  As someone mentioned before, he probably makes less mistakes than any other player I have played against.  He also knows how to build a solid deck, wait for the perfect timing in casting anything, being very patient,  and is very good in knowing when to keep a hand vs. mulligan.  He is as solid as a player as I have played against.

I have yet to play anyone in the tournaments hosted by me or others on these forums that wasn't brimming full of some of the top players.  It has been a pleasure.  Until next time!

P.S.  Don't be too sad Kupo Trooper, you are still the only undefeated person within a single !Flush tournament.  And 1 of only 2 Champions so far!
