I just want to dedicate a single line to the fact that I (probably) lost the semifinals of a PTQ last night due to mana screw. I don't want to complain about it, I just want to say that it happens and you should suck it up.
Well by looking at the limited top 8s for 2012 I found that the person keeping 7 cards has a 69.2% chance to win over a person keeping less than 7, perhaps 'sucking it up' isn't the best option.
Well, they have an equal chance of having to mull...
The reason I put in "probably" was because I kept a 7 that proved inadequate when drawing land for the first four turns. I think I was right in keeping it, but I'm still considering it.
For those interested, the hand was Judge's Familiar , Dramatic Rescue , Voidwielder , Plains , Plains , Island , Island in a relatively slow straight Azorius deck. I'll probably put up the decklist in an article some time soon.

actually it probably is, because nobody likes hearing about someone's mana issues constantly because it happens to everyone.

You were probably right to keep it, but if those cards were representative of the deck as a whole, I can't see how you got to the semi-finals. Did the deck have a bunch of Skymark Rocs?

It had one, but also sported triple Hussar Patrol , triple Cancel , two New Prahv Guildmage s and Jace, Architect of Thought . As I said, I'll make sure to put up the list some time later.

Well that certainly sounds better. I'm not a huge fan of Cancel (which is odd, because I was a huge fan of Counterspell) but I've often thought the strength of an Azorius deck can be approximated by the number of Guildmages, Skymark Rocs and Lyev Skyknights it has. And while the new Jace isn't as crazy as Jace TMS was, any Planeswalker has the potential to be crazy good in limited.

Yes, powerful uncommons can increase the strength of any deck. Street spasms, guildmages, dreg manglers, calls of the conclave, and teleporals all make their respective decks stronger, but that's true of any guild, it's not unique to azorius.
I don't have an egosig because I'd rather my ideas be judged on their merits than on mine. Catpoints: Spoiler:

I suppose it comes down to Azorius being the weakest guild and needing the power uncommons, while the other guilds can get by with commons. The only Azorius common that I really love is Sunspire Griffin, but there's nothing to stop Selensya from poaching it. While Selensya gets centaurs and populate at common, Golgari gets salvage and death touch, Rakdos gets a whole bunch of power creatures and removal and Izzet gets Frostborn Weirds and the strong red cards that Rakdos doesn't take.

I don't know if I agree with that. Playable Azorius commons: Vassal Soul Tower Drake Azorius Arrester Dramatic Rescue Hussar Patrol Inaction Injunction Isperia's Skywatch

Of those commons however, the Hussar Patrol is only one I am happy to get. While overall the commons I am happy to get are: Stab Wound , Frostburn Weird , Splatter Thug , Dead Reveler , Auger Spree , Centaur's Herald , Centaur Healer , Gorehouse Chain-Walker , Lobber Crew , Annihilating Fire , Sunspire Griffin , Knightly Valor , Explosive Impact , Sewer Shambler , Ogre Jailbreaker , Sluiceway Scorpion , Towering Indrik , Trestle Troll , Trostani's Judgement , Hussar Patrol So all in all I count 8 red mana symbols, 7 black mana symbols, 6 White mana symbols, 5 green mana symbols and 2 blue mana symbols. It's not looking very good for Azorius.

The best Azorius common is probably Hussar Patrol , closely followed by Voidwielder and then Azorius Arrester and Isperia's Skywatch . Seller of Songbirds is way better than most people give it credit for, too. Griffin is good and so is Drake, and the Soul is okay too (you certainly want some 3-mana fliers) but they are not essential.
