More familiar cards that you already posted in previous threads.. Although I like raiding things, I explained in one of the threads why this mechanic doesn't really make sense on "Sewer Serpent".. You have probably read my post later on but didn't want to bump older threads..

I prefer to imagine Sewer Serpent's raid represents it bursting through the sewers to attack your opponent. I mean, it definitely plays different from other raid creatures, but I still believe raid makes mechanical sense here.

I don't think that, but maybe you have cards that care about raids?

Set 2 has this:

(U)

Enchantment
Whenever a creature you control successfully raids, you may draw a card.

For being the pirate tribe colour, there seem to be a lot more blue rogues than pirates at common.

Couldn't Morglogar's abilities be conglomerated? "Whenever ~ attacks or becomes revealed from your hand..."

The Couriers aren't exactly for a tribal theme, they are just intended to showcase the criminal classes of the plane. The only major tribal theme are Rogues, with a minor Dragon in the form of "reveal a Dragon from hand" cards.

That said, the Pirate one is definitely the weakest in terms of creatures it can pump. There are more Pirates in higher rarities (and black has some Pirates too), but not nearly in the same numbers of Soldiers, Minions, Rogues or Warriors.

Well, I suppose they could, in the line of ARB's sojourners , but I wanted to keep them separate to draw attention to the reveal from hand ability.

Stillwind Pirate seems very underwhelming. A gray ogre is nothing special, and I got to make sure he attacks unblocked just to keep a land tapped? And not even get any damage through?

Blue looks really bad in this set. The lack of evasion, removal, anti-intimidate or aggressive creatures really hurts it all around. Morlogar Vesuvi looks really cool though.

This. I feel that blue is your most poorly designed colour (wrt commons, anyway). There aren't mana reliable flying beaters (which blue almost always has), and all the good "stock" blue effects (Draw, bounce, counter, etc) seem to be tied up in trying to use the set's mechanics (like Mysteries) in as "tricky" a way as possible.

Contrary to the others, I really like  Sewer Serpent. Raid is starting to grow on me.

I like both your mythics a lot. They feel like really fantastic mythic design.

Couple random nitpicks:

-Raid could be worded a bit clearer  Something like "(This creature can attack an opponent’s {blah} as though that {blah} were a player. If this would deal combat damage to a {blah} while unblocked, instead the raid is successful.) "

While it's fairly easy to infer from context, the repetetive use of "it" could get confusing. "So my Pirate can attack a land as though it were a player? How does a player attack something?"

-Stillwind Pirate definitely needs to use "that land." My first though was "Wait, why is raiding such a big advantage that it makes this guy go slakoth on me?"

-Case of the Missing Journalist. Disappeared might be grammatically correct, I dunno, but it sounds awkward (Disappearing would work too).

-On that note, I dunno how much design space you can work with, but it's a tad disappointing that all the mysteries have the same transform trigger and they're all just solved by tossing some mana at them and sacrificing them. Like maybe something like "Whenever CARDNAME is put into your hand from the battlefield, you may put a card named CARDNAME into play from your hand. If you do, transform it." and "Whenever a creature comes into play, sacrifice CARDNAME: If you do, do stuff." Or something to that effect, just throwing together an example off the top of my head.

I'm considering changing Stillwind Pirate to raid any permanent. Maybe tap it as well, but that would probably exceed what's acceptable at common.

On Mysteries, set 1 has them at the simplest execution. Since individual mysteries have more room for design than, say, the werewolf mechanic, I think that is okay. Set 2 has a few different Mysteries, like this:

Wanted Man (C)

Creature -- Human Rogue
3/2
: Transform Wanted Man.
---
Faked Death
Enchantment -- Mystery
: Transform Faked Death.

(that is my favorte Mystery design.)

Also, Mysteries that have effects other than sacrificing themselves for effect:

Prosperous Trader (U)

Creature -- Human Citizen
1/2
When Prosperous Trader dies, return it to the battlefield transformed.
---
Case of the Counterfeit Coins
Enchantment -- Mystery
At the beginning of your upkeep, draw a card, then discard a card.
, Sacrifice Case of the Counterfeit Coins: Draw three cards, then discard a card.

Also: anyone would be interested in a sample Sealed pool?

Agreed to this. Less about intimidate, but more about the lack of evasion. If you have a color not known for its creatures, they have to be sneaky.

That said, I wouldn't mind intimidate on blue 1/1s, but not on creatures much bigger.

Yes. Idea: PM everyone a different Sealed pool, then run a tournament.

Flag Riorvard November 11, 2012 3:11 AM PST
I think I will do some sample pools to see what people think of the format, and depending of the result, a tournament.  It may even have a symbolic amount of MTGO tickets as a prize, who knows.

Reads like it's the pirate that stays tapped and not the land...
