Ever notice how Heath Ledger's Joker sounds like Richard Dreyfuss?
Show
theScion - That's pretty crazy with any phyrexian mana that can be repeatedly paid... but that's what we asked for! What I really like is how much this card stands on its own. I can see how it was crafted for the deck in mind, but its a solid design outside of it and perfectly in flavor with what I expect from a white fateful hour card.
Catotheyounger - The growth from solid tapper to solid destroyer is smart and shows off the standard of fateful hour making an ability better. I would have written it as one mechanic: "Fateful Hour - : Tap target creature. Then if you have 5 or less life, destroy it." I think there are more interesting directions to take it in, but this is a fine submission as is.
theatog - This just seems so had to achieve. If you annihilate an opponent's graveyard, hand, and nonland permanents, you're probably winning already. I suppose it has some multiplayer uses, but it just seems that this card rewards you for already winning.
silasw - I'm not sure how much this drawback matters; you're never gona play it in a deck where you're stuck with it. The theme is nice and makes sense, but this drawback is so awkward. It might as well say "You can't play spells unless they are colorless." I still like it, but I wonder if the drawback matters in the way you'd want it to.
Mown - Considering the comparison to Samurai of the Pale Curtain , I think this could have cost 1 less. Not sure, though. It would have been nice to see this in a color other than white, but I'm not sure it would have worked in red which is where I'd want it most. Anyway, its got quite the flavor and works rather well.
Kavu_Overlord - A drawback mechanic. That makes Mindslaver insane. I've always like the usefulness of cards that eat your own cards, like Rats of Rath . I'm not sure the forced life loss adds much other than flavor.
Dudibus - One mana wraths are... too good. Even though you're paying against a deck that's beating you down, at worst you'll usually be bolting yourself. Imagine casting this on turn three. Not only do you clear the board, but you have counter mana open! I wouldn't cost this card lower than . Otherwise, its a fine mechanic with a number of interesting decisions forced upon the caster.
Steinhauser - Eek! Permanent Yawgmoth's Bargain ? This + Dark Ritual = infinite mana? Edit: So, raz pointed out that the life loss and exiling is for all spells you cast, not for the enchantment itself. I definitely misread that. That changes EVERYTHING. Now it's a neat little combo piece whose restrictions make Johnnies tumble all over trying to break it. And it doesn't seem easily breakable. I like it a lot more now that my eyes are working.
Catotheyounger - This is a fun little number. I like black getting more straight mill cards; I never felt is was important to deviate between exile mill and traditional mill. Anyway, I like the idea going on here, but R&D has moved reanimation up to 5cmc, so I'd look for this to cost . I do like the whole concept, though.
Kingreaper - A blue counterspell meant for splashing if ever there was one. I think 10 is a bit too restricting, making this card useful for a huge portion of the game. It's a nice, clean number, but something like 13 gets the effect to play better, I think. Maybe even 15, maybe even higher! The idea behind the design is solid and new, so its a good showing in my book.
Imidazoline - That's a tricky submission. It took a while for me to get it. Some cards with complex text don't feel all that rewarding when you finally figure out the grand scheme, but this one did for me. An epic 4-turn clock as it were. It's innovative and actually gets somewhere. Nice card.
Jessica_Morgan - I like the utility of this card. There are plenty of sui-black strategies that propel this into a super-bolt, and teh risk/reward of the card makes it cool in that aspect. It's also a fine life-gain card and interesting in multiplayer.
Glasir - I suppose that fills the criteria. I'm not the biggest stickler to following criteria precisely, so that doesn't bother me. Anyway, this is an okay approach to milling, and I like how it feeds off itself.

you think that's bad? imagine how the other 5-slice guys felt. they all got shoved into one category, and then Kavu just comes along and yoinks it away from them all and goes on his merry, Kavu-y way.

Round 9 winners!what's this? it's only mid-day sunday, and we're already getting the winner's circle? it's almost like Raz and Rush are organized. I wouldn't recommend getting used to it. anyway, who are our winners? we have, in order, Scion, Kavu, Stein, KR, Imi, and Glasir! that's in category order, not ranking. just, you know, making sure that's clear. I didn't just ruin the surprise. it's round 9, I know what I'm doing by now. man I can't think of anything though
Show
sixth place is Glasir! congrats on clearing out your multiplayer slice! man are they all gonna be boring this time?
Show
and then it's Stein, perfectly encapsulating the probably-broken bullshit that populated Ice Age! man, this is what happens when I'm nowhere near a deadline
Show
and then Kavu, for whatever he did, I don't remember! and people wonder why I'm always late. it just works better when I am.
Show
and then KR, with the only Innovation entry this round! man what the heck is this anyway
Show
and then there's Scion, with that card Scion made! and finally...

So, now that's over, I want to be somewhat narcissistic. What makes Kavu's submission so great? Or, to be more precise; what makes it so great, given the criteria? I can't see how any part of it actually fits, so I'm wondering if my impression of the philosophy contradicts that of everyone else's. Or the judges and Kavu's, at least.
Everything Mown does is elegant.

it's hard to put my finger on, but I think what I liked about Kavu's was the apparent pointlessness of the ability, both in terms of how it appeared and its actual use. when you use it, you're just pointlessly throwing things away. there's no point to sacrificing things, you just do it because why not? I mean, when you do it, it'll be for reasons, like your colfenor's plans has served its purpose, because you can't put truly useless abilities on cards, but the feel of the ability reflects the pointlessness of the permanent's existence. it didn't get thrown away to gain life , or to feed something else , it got thrown away because there was no reason not to. I also really liked the flavor text.

Round 10!double digits! hooray! this round we saw some surprising upsets and a couple more people approaching the threshold. let's see what this next round brings! also me and Rush actually did these this morning but I didn't want you guys thinking we were too efficient because then it looks bad later when we screw up. this round's theme we finally get to what we were obviously gonna get to eventually, everyone's favorite set theme, Combat! Formatcraft: Imagine the returning mechanic for Magic 2014 is Provoke. Make an uncommon for limited that is good in a dedicated provoke deck, but less so outside it. Flavor: Make a card that represents two creatures fighting without using the fight keyword. History: Alara Reborn was the last set to use the "damage on the stack" combat rule. Make a card for taht set that is better with that rule around. Innovation: Make a card that gives an opponent an additional combat phase. Elegance: Make a creature that must attack or must block. Multiplayer: Make a commander that influences you to win through commander damage.
