I guess a handy "if" might have helped. But the way you word it as well is misleading.

you assign 6 damage to Fog Bank, and all 6 will be prevented




Sure, if you wanted to deal 6 to the Fog Bank, it would be prevented, but a trampler only needs to deal damage equal to the blocker's toughness; the remainder tramples over to the defending player. I thought this was in reference to Trample vs. Fog Bank.

Got this confused with a search for Trample vs. Fog Bank(damage preventing blockers). My bad.

right, but the OP didn't mention anything about trample

a Wurmcoil Engine (6/6 lifelink deathtouch) would assign and deal all 6 to the blocking Fog Bank and it would all be prevented and therefore gain no life.

Found it. I saw LMTRK's post noting Trample and my train of thought went down a different track. I apologize.
