Does a creature with Lifelink that hits the fog bank which prevents combat damage mean the controller of the creature with lifelink does not gain the life or is that the damage is prevented after being done?

The damage is prevented, therefore no damage is dealt and no life is gained.
Note, that you cannot prevent something that has already happened.

The damage is prevented, meaning that it isn't dealt. Since no damage is dealt, no life is gained.

Note that if the attacking creature also had Trample, and enough power, then it's controller could gain some life (equal to the amount of damage that trampled over the
Fog Bank
).

But if the creature was a 6/6 with lifelink wouldn't the extra 4 damage be lifelinked?

Fog Bank doesn't prevent damage equal to its toughness. It prevents ALL combat damage dealt to it. All of 6 is 6.

no
you assign 6 damage to Fog Bank, and all 6 will be prevented

if it was a 6/6 with lifelink AND trample, you could assign 4 to the defending player and gain 4 life for that un-prevented damage.

I guess a handy "if" might have helped. But the way you word it as well is misleading.

no
you assign 6 damage to Fog Bank, and all 6 will be prevented
Sure, if you wanted to deal 6 to the Fog Bank, it would be prevented, but a trampler only needs to deal damage equal to the blocker's toughness; the remainder tramples over to the defending player. I thought this was in reference to Trample vs. Fog Bank.
Got this confused with a search for Trample vs. Fog Bank(damage preventing blockers). My bad.

right, but the OP didn't mention anything about trample
a Wurmcoil Engine
(6/6 lifelink deathtouch) would assign and deal all 6 to the blocking Fog Bank
and it would all be prevented and therefore gain no life.

Found it. I saw LMTRK's post noting Trample and my train of thought went down a different track. I apologize.
