Does a creature with Lifelink that hits the fog bank which prevents combat damage mean the controller of the creature with lifelink does not gain the life or is that the damage is prevented after being done?
The damage is prevented, therefore no damage is dealt and no life is gained.
Note, that you cannot prevent something that has already happened.
The damage is prevented, meaning that it isn't dealt. Since no damage is dealt, no life is gained.
Note that if the attacking creature also had Trample, and enough power, then it's controller could gain some life (equal to the amount of damage that trampled over the Fog Bank ).
But if the creature was a 6/6 with lifelink wouldn't the extra 4 damage be lifelinked?
Fog Bank doesn't prevent damage equal to its toughness. It prevents ALL combat damage dealt to it. All of 6 is 6.
I guess a handy "if" might have helped. But the way you word it as well is misleading.
in general it is better to create a new thread
with old threads there might have been rules updates in the meantime
