Alright, as some of you might have noticed, I didn't post anything for last week, now don't worry I know you're concerned about me, your silence speaks volumes, but there's a good reason for that: Last week was kind of disgraceful.
I mean, I literally forgot that Magic even existed. I just came home that the Friday before last, and typed up that week's briefing, and then just threw my cards into a corner so I could play other games for the rest of the week. When Friday rolled around, I just grabbed my cards as they were and went. I forgot to do SO MIUCH! I forgot to make changes to my sideboard, I forgot to make my little trading list, and even in the previous FNM some of my sleeves were damaged, I forgot to replace them with my spares! I had to take some of the sleeves from my SB and leave those cards bare and cold! It was truly something to look at and just shake your head disapprovingly.
That week I got really unlucky going up against the GB Zombies Thragtusk guy for the first match, and while I scored a single game's win, just got rolled in the first and third games. It so hard to slow down! Can't have a single hiccup or it's over. I don't know what's with dreg mangler
s, getting an on-curve body with haste in a color that rarely sees it, and it recurs to help bring more beats later. Oh, and it's in a relevant tribe, that's insane. Messenger's and Crawlers? Yeah, those bring some good beats, but the manglers are the ones carrying it home more often than not. Lotleth Troll
s are kinda insane too. Oh, and Deathrite shaman
s. I don't know why Golgari has this just cruel amount of absurdly efficient creatures in the 1-3 cmc range, you can't even punish the behavior of windmill slamming your hand on the table and overcommitting with board wipes because so many things also recur.
Then I got paired up against this guy's brother of all people, running a damn good four color unburial rite's deck. I got rolled in the first match, as I just can't match the efficiency of unburial rites on an angel of serenity, cause even killing it returns a cadre of fatties to his hand. Second match was prolonged a bit when I slaughter games'd his unburial rites, taking out all four and just narrowly preventing him from starting his engine back up. He then proceeds to then have the most nuts draws in existence, drawing every answer he needs and every bomb he needs, and gets his land count up to high enough level to just hardcast Angel of Serenity. I do a desperate thing where I kill it, and then Rakdos's Return his hand back to the graveyard. Of course, empty hand, he draws into his second angel and crushes me.
At this point, with two straight losses, now I'm seated at what's basically the Special Needs table facing people's broken homebrews. I just roll right over this poor guy's selesnya deck that had a suspicious lack of creatures, and this other guy's BW Exalted pile that just ran out of gas too fast before getting locked down.
This time though, I'm prepared. Strategically, but also mentally prepared!
Last week I bought my second Rakdos's Return, I took out my singleton Pimp Cup Demon
and added that in.
Here's the changes I've made to my SB for this week, inspired by your suggestions
-4 rakdos charms
-3 annihilating fire
-1 slaughter games
+1 tribute to hunger
So my whole SB looks like:
4 x cremate
3 x slaughter games
1 x tribute to hunger
2 x dreadbore
2 x pack rat
3 x duress
I decided to take out the single slaughter games because I don't think I'll ever be in a situation where I'll need to side in all four, it would just start making the deck clunk and bunk. I'm always REALLY scared to side in the Rakdos charms, cause there's always the chance they'll be dead draws in a vital situation, but I'm alot more secure in Cremates. My 1 tribute to hunger is just nice to have around, and it helps give me more cheap removal and lifegain on hand. The 3 duress' were the hardest part, cause I mean, it lets me look at their hand, but while it's very likely, there's no guarantee it'll hit something, and it has a chance of being a dead draw on a tight board as well. It's the thing I need though for those control matchups, it's that bitter medicine.
Might start on my playset of dragonskull summits this week.
