Does Prey Upon ignore the Detain mechanic? Yesterday I had a friend use Prey Upon to have his detained card kill another one of my cards. His reasoning was "fighting" and "attacking" are two different categories of functions in the game. Since detain only prevents "attacking", they can still "fight" as described by the prey upon card. I'm still very new to Magic so I went along with what he said, but I just wanted to check to make sure.

yes, "fight" is neither attacking nor blocking, it also doesn't involve activated abilities, so Detain doesn't stop Prey Upon

A detained Nightfall Predator wouldn't be able to use his own ability to fight, because that's an activated ability. You could use Prey Upon to make him fight, because that's a spell.

Ok, quick question about Prey Upon. Can you use Prey Upon against a creature that is already tapped? Say Llanowar Elf is already tapped and hit with Prey Upon. Will it work?

Yes, Prey upon works on any creature you can target. Being tapped or untapped has no influence on fighting. Otherwise, Nightfall Predator would be rather pointless.

no First/Double Strike, Trample, evasion abilities like Flying, etc. all only care about combat, not about fight
Lifelink, Deathtouch, Infect, etc. however do apply for Fight as well, because they apply to all damage
