My friend and I were playing at lunch today and he had something like a Lavaclaw Reaches land and Naya Hushblade . He said that the land because it was gold bordered counted as another multicolored permanent. As a land has no mana on it, the usual determining factor if something is multicolored I protested. Does such land count towards the multicolored trigger?

Edit: Thank you very much for the responses. I have shown this to my friend and he has conceeded the point. Thank you all.

The color(s) of an object are defined by its color indicator. If an object doesn't have a color indiccator, then it uses its mana cost instead. Since Lavaclaw Reaches (and all other lands except this one ) has no color indicator and no mana cost, it is colorless.

You are correct, the land has no color.  An object's color is always determined by its mana cost, or an effect that says it has a color.  It doesn't matter what color the frame is.

Lavaclaw Reaches has no mana cost and so it is colorless.

Not that it matters, but it doesn't even have a gold border! It's a brown (rocky) border used for lands. Compare the images in your post.

Naya Hushblade would receive the buff when Lavaclaw Reaches was animated, but not when it isn't.

Cheers

would it make a difference that Rupture Spire is the land and has the golden outline?

No.  Lands are colorless, unless there is another effect giving them a color (like Painter's Servant ) or have it otherwise stated on the card ( Dryad Arbor ).

No, that doesn't matter. As already pointed out, a card's color is determined by the following:

1. Mana cost
2. Color indicator
3. Characteristic-Defining Abilities

Rupture Spire has none of these, so you can safely and correctly assume that it is colorless.
