Ive been playing for like a week, since RtR. I bought izzet ingenuity and some boosters. I want to play competitively, help me get there. Any criticism is welcome, I understand my current set up is no bueno. However, a lot of it is due to lack of cards, which is why I'm posting. Buying 300 boosters is a waste of money, I want to be specific in my purchases, but I'm not up to date on the majority of cards in the format. Help me out. Here's what I have so far, the basic idea is red/blue stacking damage on damage. Casually its done pretty decent, I beat my friends who run variations on the other RtR starter decks. but I want to compete. Creatures: 4x Guttersnipe 3x Goblin Electromancer 3x Cobblebrute 2xTenement Crasher 1x Hypersonic Dragon Red Spells: 2x Elecktrickery 2x Annihalating fire 2x Mizzium Mortars 2x Teleportal 2x Explosive Impact 2x Goblin Rally 2x Krenkos Command 1x Searing Spear 1x Chandras Fury Blue Spells: 2x Blustersquall 2x Frost Breath 1x Rewind 1x Downsize Lands: 11x island 12x mountains 1x izzet guildgate No side deck ATM because I have no idea what i need to compensate for. I know its primordial but thats why I'm here.

300 Boosters...I think Return to Ravnica is the one set I could easily open 300 boosters for. If you want to compete...I would say pick up 4x Delver of Secrets . He's a mad scientist-wizard, so he fits with the Izzet theme. Next, you could try an Overload focus with 4x Goblin Electromancer or go straight Instant/Sorcery themed with Snapcaster Mage . At the top of your curve, you could actually support Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius is you run lots of cantrip spells. Goblin Electromancer 's spellbase: 4 Pillar of Flame 4 Thoughtscour 3-4 Izzet Charm 3 Thoughtflare 3 Mizzium Mortars 2 Talrand's Invocation You can put Essence Backlash in your sideboard as an answer to biggies like Thragtusk . Delver of Secrets spellbase: 4 Pillar of Flame 4 Thought Scour 3 Izzet Charm 3 Mizzium Mortars 3 Think Twice 4 Bonfire of the Damned Again, with Delver you can sideboard Essence Backlash . Bonfire is absolutely necessary.

Thank you! I actually have a lot of those cards :D but i've never understood how bonfire of the damned worked since the cost has two X's. Does that mean i divide the extra mana tapped by two??? I looked it up once and found nothing

3x Vexing Devil 3x Goblin Electromancer 3x Delver of Secrets 2x Snapcaster Mage 2x Talrand the Sky Summoner 2x Hypersonic Dragon
4x Syncopate 3x Cyclonic Rift 3x Counterflux 4x Searing Spear 3x Annihilating Fire
4x Pillar of Flame 4x Mizzium Mortar
4x Steam Vents 4x Sulfur Falls 6x Island 6x Mountain
This way your deck is incredibly fast and have answers for lots of the things that are winning in the metagame (Zombies/Golgari) with lots of exiling spells and you have the dragon with Talrand to pump out damage. Plus Electromancer subtracts 1 from the cost of Syncopate and the overload costs for Mortar/Rift so you have different ways to sweep

Senoirnoir has a good list to start from. Vexing Devil is no good in this deck; he works best in the Legacy Burn deck. I would remove him for either Stromkirk Noble or Izzet Charm . I'm not sure about Counterflux ; seems like you'd do better with Essence Backlash or Dissipate . Counterflux, like Essence Backlash, feels more Sideboardish. Stromkirk Noble would be nice, since you might not flip an Instant/Sorcery all that often in Senoirnoir's build. I understand Bonfire as having, essentially, two costs. The first X specifies the amount of damage you want to do. The second X specifies the number of creatures you want to target. So its ridiculously good it if you can rip it and Miracle-cast it.

This is actually incorrect. The way Bonfire of the Damned normal cost works is that you have to pay double the amount of mana you would if you wanted it to do a certain amount of damage. Lets say you wanted the bonfire to hit for 3. You would actually need to pay 6 mana (3 for each X in the cost) along with the additional red, making for 7 mana total to deal 3 to your opponent's entire board.
Having said this, the reason bonfire is so good is because of it's miracle cost. Ripping it off the top of your deck with 5 or 6 mana open essentially wipes your opponent's field and lava axes then in the face, at the same time. all the while, leaving your field intact and ready to hit hard.
EDIT: Come to think of it, i just read OP's understanding of bonfire. Yes, that is technically correct. the amount you pay extra for it's damage (in reference to it's converted casting cost - not the miracle) is divided by 2.
Hope that helped,
Persimon
