@B_F, think you want the tale of Icarus.
there ya go
and there's no way you can come to me with the proposal of 5 colors and claim "consistent". i don't buy it, not for a second. Nevermind the damage to one's self
Blue is the best color ever. How do you deal? Seriously, what is this, Modern Melira Pod?
Yeah, so I would retool that list a bit to add more M10/ISD lands for the colors you wouldn't need til later. Of course, like I said, that would require knowing what the spells were, which I couldn't until Gatecrash.
ANYWAY, all I was trying to do was show that, spells pending, you could actually cover your mana with a reasonable expectation of consistency.
But yes, not killing yourself is the other end of that spectrum. Once you get the idea of what spells go at what point on the curve, you can play shocks for the early drops, and predominantly M10/ISD lands that untap from your shocks for later. And still remember to account for the fact that your T2 Farseek into T3 Keyrune/Lantern helps your fixing further.
I maintain the mana is there.
Welcome to 2012. Blue has the most efficient creatures, black has the all-in monocolored aggro deck, the most controlling deck in the format is green-red, control decks lose to aggro in attrition wars, and counterspells aren't an answer to fatties.
Pack Rat is like Bitterblossom and Tarmogoyf had a black baby.

In hindsight you have access to Sphinx's revelation and good ol' Thraggy for heals.

Yessir.
Put those Farseeks, Keyrunes and Lanterns to work, and you probably won't even notice that you shocked yourself three times.

I have SLAUGHTERED every deck I have played against running more than 3 colours. They all ran all-duals, 4 Farseek, 4 Lantern.
Failing to draw the lantern, or having it destroyed, ruins you. You skip a turn out of three either by not having castable spells, or by wasting turns to fix your mana so you can cast something the following.
When you run good, you run really good, but you lose massive amounts of consistency for very little gain - each colour beyond the second gives exponentially less marginal value.
It's really not even about giving niche cards to black.
It should be about giving black cards to Niche.

Well that's just idiotic. It's easy to splash 2 colors without deviating at all from your 2 main colors, and you don't even need Farkseek. Sample manabase:
1 Mountain 1 Swamp 1 Plains 1 Island 3 Evolving Wilds 4 Steam Vents 2 Sulfur Falls 3 Clifftop Retreat 3 Drowned Catacomb 3 Bloodcrypt 2 Hallowed Fountain 1 Desolate Lighthouse
All but 3 lands tap for Blue or Red, and 9/10 tap for your splash colors. Easy to build correctly.

Anecdotal evidence works both ways. Every Delver player I play against has a flawed version of the deck. Therefore Delver sucks.
Ah.

OK, I forgot to finish working on a many-colored deck list last night, but here is my shot at it right now:
4 Centaur Healer 4 Thragtusk 4 Restoration Angel
3 Abundant Growth
4 Lingering Souls 2 Sever the Bloodlines 2 Terminus 3 Jace, the Newest One 2 Tamiyo, Socks with Sandals
1 Syncopate 1 Essence Scatter 1 Sphines' Revelation
4 Chromatic Lantern
3 Temple Garden 3 Hallowed Fountain 3 Golgari Guildgate 5 Island 3 Forest 4 Plains 3 Swamp
Sideboard: 2 Heroes' Reunion 3 Dead Weight
I couldn't figure out anything in red beyond Pillar of Flame worth playing. Also, I made this in about 10 minutes, a majority spent looking through all the standard red cards.
