Story-wise I feel the guilds are described to be a bit extreme. For example Orzhov is just an oppressed religion Guild who all benefit the higher ups. But why would anyone choose to join such a guild (if the guilds were real). Rakdos sounds like a bloody, masochistic circus where at any moment someone in your own guild may try to kill you for their own pleasure. Selesnya just sounds like a personality oppressed cult of hippies (nothing wrong with hippies lol).

There are some guilds that aren't too bad. Like Simic is just a bunch of nature scientist. Azorius, though law making and strict, is no different than any law enforcement. Even Izzet, who is the borderline of extreme/casual is only bad due to the Guild leader's vanity.

I don't know too much about Gruul, Golgari, Dimir or Boros but perhaps those guilds are individual perspectives. Well Dimir is ally about secrets which isn't too bad I guess. All in all injustice wondering, if say the guilds where a real thing in THIS world, if some would be too extreme? I guess I myself would prefer the guild that allows the most individuality, creativity but without an extreme aspect(s).

Not really. You have to remember that a lot of what we see, especially in the cards, is the most extreme fringes of the Guilds.  Both the Orzhov and Selesnya guilds are leaders in public works projects.  The Selesnyans run communes and out-reach clinics while the Orzhov Church funds soup kitchens and orphanages through donation drives.  The Rakdos are sometimes a violent bunch, but also run some pretty decent entertainment clubs featuring bohemian works and burlesque styles.  They are the fashion of Ravnica.  The Izzet supply the technology and the power to make the city-wide world even function.  Without smart-grids and steam-works on that scale, there is no way Ravnica could exist.

Well, I think where you're running into problems is not in the guilds themselves but in their application to real life. Things are exaggerated because Magic often deals in bombast and style. That's what looks good in card form. Compare to the proliferation of extra collars on Innistrad clothes, or an entire plane of D&D campaigns. I don't think any of this should be taken as literally feasible, it's about the style and the visceral feel of the thing. If it helps, assume that our accounts are exaggerated in the same way that ancient explorers exaggerated or misinterpreted what they found in new lands.

@AzureShade
Yeah I never really thought of the upside of the guilds, their individual responsibilities. I just though Orzhov was overly greedy and Selesnya a love cult lol.

@KeeperofManyNames
It's not so much I take it litterely, I just like imagining a world like that and try to see where my mindset would fall. It's more of a speculation for personal entertainment.

Ravinca itself is taken to an extreme. It's an entire plane of made up of one city. Unless "create water/food" is as easy a spell in magic as in 3.5 D&D. There's many more problems beyond that one.

However, a more interesting question is "Are the guilds more extreme now than last time?" Some of them are, and the only one less extreme is Azorius, maybe. Boros seem to have gotten the worst of this. They were the law enforcement, an entire branch of Dirty Harry's, repeatedly being told to hand in their badges. Now, they're Mercenaries? Apparently, we can't have even one mostly good guild.

The Golgari are so far morally decent if not outright benevolent, so we do have good guilds.

The Azorius took a level in rationality, but they are still evil sometimes.

It's not a matter of which guilds are good or not, all of the guilds are very extreme.

Every guild exists in layers. They all have good members that genuinely believe that their guild's work is to the betterment of all of Ravnica, and there are also megalomanic bastards.

Funny story:
InQuest Magazine (I think it was InQuest) had an oversized Chaos Orb which I totally rooked someone into allowing into a (non-sanctioned) game.
I had a proxy card that was a Mountain with "Chaos Orb" written on it. When I played it, my opponent cried foul:

Him: "WTF? a Proxy? no-one said anything about Proxies. Do you even own an actual Chaos Orb?"
Me: "Yes, but I thought it would be better to use a Proxy."
Him: "No way. If you're going to put a Chaos Orb in your deck you have to use your actual Chaos Orb."
Me: "*Sigh*. Okay."

I pulled out this huge Chaos Orb and placed it on the table. He tried to cry foul again but everyone else said he insisted I use my actual Chaos Orb and that was my actual Chaos Orb. I used it, flipped it and wiped most of his board.

Unsurprisingly, that only worked once and only because everyone present thought it was hilarious.

Hi guys!  So, I'm a sort of returning player to Magic.  I say sort of because as a child I had two main TCG's I liked.  Yu-Gi-Oh, and Pokemon.  Some of my friends branched off in to Magic, and I bought two pre-made decks just to kind of fit in.  Like I said, Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon were what I really knew how to play.  I have a extensive knowledge of deck building in those two TCG's.  However, as far as Magic is concerned, I only ever used those two pre made decks.  I know how the game is played, and I know general things, but now I want to get in the game for real.  I want to begin playing it as a regular.  My question is, are all cards ever released from the time of the inception of this game until present day fair game in a deck?  Or are there special rules?  Are some cards forbidden or restricted?  Thanks guys, and I will gladly accept ANY help lol.

That's what RPJesus tends to do. That's why I don't think he's a real person, but some Magic Card Archive Server sort of machine, that is programmed to react to other posters' comments with obscure cards that do in fact exist, but somehow missed by even the most experienced Magic players.

And then come up with strange combos with said cards. All of that is impossible for a normal human to do given the amount of time he does it and how often he does it.

He/It got me with Light of Sanction , which prompted me to go to RQ&A to try and find if it was even possible to do combat damage to a creature I control (in light that Mark of Asylum exists).
