I'm currently brainstorming a self mill deck. I haven't played it yet, but I wanted to see what you guys thought before I try to track down the cards I'm missing. Creatures: 24 4x Deathrite Shaman 4x Pack Rat 4x Splinterfright 2x Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord 2x Disciple of Bolas 1x Deadbridge Goliath 3x Thragtusk 1x Kessig Cagebreakers 3x Ghoultree Other Spells: 12 4x Grisly Salvage 2x Mulch 2x Jarad's Orders 4x Tragic Slip Lands: 24 Forest s Swamp s Overgrown Tomb s Woodland Cemetery s Evolving Wilds Maybe Grim Backwoods ? OK, so obviously the plan is to fill the yard using Grisly Salvage , Mulch and even Pack Rat and kill them with gigantic Splinterfright s and such. Deathrite Shaman can help me ramp into some threats a turn early (works especially well with Evolving Wilds ) and even chucks my used spells at the opponent for some damage. Pack Rat can also be a win condition, albeit one I'm iffy on. Thragtusk s are in because a little birdy told me he's pretty good (plus I happen to own them already). Disciple of Bolas seems to synergize pretty well with Thragtusk as well as some of my other big creatures. The singleton creatures are to search up with Jarad's Orders . Kessig Cagebreakers for a late game finisher and Deadbridge Goliath to throw into the yard to scavenge at will. Some other cards I'm considering: Lotleth Troll might be better than Pack Rat here, but I'm not sure. Pack Rat sure is easier on the wallet! Dreg Mangler seems strong, but I don't know what I'd remove for him. Korozda Guildmage seems alright. Spider Spawning might be a little cute, but has some potential. I'm also not sure what to do about removal. Tragic Slip ? Murder ? Ultimate Price ? Victim of Night ? I know Abrupt Decay is good, but it's not cheap and not being able to hit bigger creatures seems like a real drawback. I do own a copy of Liliana of the Veil for pseudo removal, but she's useless if she gets milled. She doesn't even provide fuel for Deathrite Shaman . I'd appreciate any feedback you guys could give.

I think you want 4 Mulch.
I think I don't like Disciple of Bolas.
I think Cagebreakers should be a 3rd Jarad since control will find a good way to chain sweepers onto you were you to get out of hand. Finding a combat swing will be tough. And their main answers will be O Ring and Detention Sphere so running 3 Jarad will be a big deal.
Deadbridge can probably go... and use that slot to make Tragic Slip a 3 and add 2 Abrupt Decay (why to tag O-Rings of course).
I'm dubious of Jarad's Orders... but generally I like this deck and I think it could work... and if it does Jarad's Orders will probably be a player for binning a Jarad.

Yeah, 4 copies of Mulch seems optimal. I'll try to fit 2 more in there. Now my question is, if I have 4 Grisly Salvage and 4 Mulch is it feasible to cut a land or two? I'll be digging through my deck pretty fast. Also, out of curiosity, what is it you don't like about Disciple of Bolas ? Do you think it's too slow or doesn't fit the strategy? I just put it in because I have a lot of high power targets for it, such as Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord and Thragtusk .

I have a similar deck, an dreg mangler is great as well as the guildmage, because making ghoultrees intimidating and then flinging them at people is delicious! as for dreg mangler it depends on how aggressive your metagame is, if they are playing alot of fast aggro decks hes better at keeping up vs, control plus he can be scavenged which is always nice if needed.

I just don't think Disciple is going to do what you want. If you have a huge guy out you want to turn into life and cards... you generally want to turn him sideways. As a 2/1 he's irrelevant. If you want to get rid of your guys Jarad does something great for that.

Amen, toss the bolas and focus on getting a big guy out swining and sac with jarad for game. I wouldnt reccomend thrag and replace it with 2 more mulches and a ghoultree.
A land u would really like to help you hit em where it counts with your frights and ghoultrees would be Rogue's Passage
I really like the deathrite/evolving wilds combo.
Please, take time to mention the divine verdict flavoring...
It's just flavor. Read into it whatever meaning you want.

You know, as much as I think 4 mana is a heavy activation cost on a land.... paying 4 to get a Ghoultree in is extremely efficient mana expenditure. And it should be convenient with a full set of Mulches and Grisly Salvages and Deathrite Shamans to push mana.

I actually kind of like this. Your lands and creatures give you everything you want for your big/bigs. Evasion and reach and ca. 4 x Deathrite Shaman 3 x Dawntreader Elk 4 x Pack Rat 3 x Splinterfright 3 x Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord 3 x Thragtusk 4 x Ghoultree 4 x Mulch 4 x Grisly Salvage 3 x Abrupt Decay 3 x Sever the Bloodline 4 x Overgrown Tomb 4 x Woodland Cemetery 2 x Rogue's Passage 7 x Forest 5 x Swamp The deck does have a kind of awkward spot on turn 3/4. You probably need to do some damage control but you can start getting into creature fights pretty profitably from there forward. Hurray for Thragtusk. And being able to throw your guys or send them in via the Passage.
