Pretty into this thing I came up with yesterday. Matrix Cost - If you pay the Matrix Cost, X becomes X 2. Pretty sure it is way cooler than Overload. Also, obvious Kicker knock-off, and only works on X spells, but imagine this MR Hydra. Functional Hydra Creature - HydraTrample ~ enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it. Whenever ~ attacks, double the number of +1/+1 counters on it. Matrix: Lose half your life rounded down - X becomes X 2. 0/0
Whiny weenie and observant aren't the same thing pablo, somehow I thought you'd understand.

Own Mechanic
Artifact Creature-Own Artificer You are Own Mechanic. (Damage dealt to you is dealt to Own Mechanic and vice versa, enchantments and equipment affecting Own Mechanic affect you and vice versa, and if another player gains control of Own Mechanic they gain control of you and vice versa.)

I came up with a cool "swarm" mechanic (though people suggested I change the name to "surge"), but although it was simple to understand, it took a lot of text to explain. Then again, so does banding :P . Surge (When ~ enters the battlefield, for each other nontoken creature that shares a type with it, put a token onto the battlefield that's a copy of it, except it loses Surge. Then put a -1/-1 counter on all creatures that share a type with ~) A key thing to note is that copy effects don't copy counters, they only copy the properties printed on the card. So let's say I have a Rune-Scarred Demon out. It's a 6/6. I play something with surge, and it creates a copy of Rune-Scarred demon, then puts -1/-1 counters on them both, making them 5/5. If I play something else with Surge, I now have a 5/5 in play as well as two 4/4's. And this can happen as many times until the original card dies from being reduced to 0 toughness, resulting in nothing to be copied next time I try to surge. The original idea was that it was turning your creatures into a Swarm of small creatures, each wave smaller than the last (for a Plague creature type), but it works for other uses as well. Before arguing that it's OP, consider that Surge would be an ETB effect, and making the tokens lose Surge prevents ridiculous two-surge combos.
All cards I make have artists credited in the appropriate places. Artist names in "quotes" are DeviantArt usernames unless otherwise mentioned. Click here ---> <--- Click here I'm now going to quote you out of context in my sig because that's what adorable monkey-pigs like me do.

Berserk ( If this ally would be destroyed it is not until end of turn.) I know its a poor mans indestructible but it has way more flavour and has a lot more design space. Enraged Troll Creature - Troll Berserk ( If this ally would be destroyed it is not until end of turn.) If Enraged Troll has been dealt lethal damage this turn it gains trample and gets +3/+0 until end of turn. 3/3 Fresh Recruit Creature - Human Soldier Berserk ( If this ally would be destroyed it is not until end of turn.) 2/1 Bonesnapper Legendary Creature - Minotaur Berserk ( If this ally would be destroyed it is not until end of turn.) Whenever Bonesnapper is dealt damage, choose one - target player discards a card at random; target creature gets -1/-1 until end of turn; or you gain a life and target player loses a life. 4/4

Perfect originality is overrated and often ugly. The best and most beautiful cards I've ever seen were clearly inspired by something else.
Cards are not entirely unlike living organisms in this regard. All the good ones are a result of long evolution; the 'original' ones are either monocellular or mutant aberrations.
Graveborn are strictly better than Zombies. I mean, look at that wicked beard . You try growing that when your dead. And I know aging fellows who are suffering from Male Pattern Baldness, who would kill for a Mop like Ribsy's over there.
Hey Dudibus, I can't take you seriously until you take your shirt off!

Demolish! Gruul Stomper - Creature Overrun (Whenever a blocked creature with Overrun deals damage to a player, double that damage.)
3/1 Every creature with Overrun would have trample as well, but I can't find the reminder text right now

My pet mechanic is Augment. Were it in the Comp Rules, it would be listed something like this (gonna use 97 since that would be the next keyword ability listing): 702.97. Augment 702.97a Augment is a static ability. "Augment N" means "This creature gets +N/+N for each counter on it." "Augment -N" means "This creature gets -N/-N for each counter on it." 702.97b "Augment X" is a special form of augment. "Augment X" means "This creature gets +X/+X for each counter on it, where X is the number of counters on it." "Augment -X" means "This creature gets -X/-X for each counter on it, where X is the number of counters on it." 702.97c If an object has multiple instances of augment, each applies separately. So, a couple of examples... Plagueborn Horror Creature-Carrier Horror Augment 2 ~ enters the battlefield with two -1/-1 counters on it. 0/0 Unseemly Affliction Instant As an additional cost to cast ~, remove a -1/-1 counter from a Carrier creature you control. Put a -1/-1 counter on target creature. Until end of turn, it gains augment -1. Dispersal Carrier Creature-Carrier Cleric Augment X ~ enters the battlefield with three -1/-1 counters on it. , , Remove a counter from ~: Put a counter of the same kind removed from ~ on each other creature. -1/-1 Admittedly, most of these are based on an older attempt of mine to make my own set. Originally I used "plague counters" and every creature in the set had some ability that interacted with counters (Augment being the most widespread one), cause at the time Wizards was still sticking to their promise to never use -1/-1 counters again. Now that Shadowmoor and Scars of Mirrodin have both happened...I don't mind using -1/-1 counters instead, which if I revisit an attempt to make the set, will replace a lot of the mechanics. Technically, this ability could work in all colors, but I think it would be most prominent in colors. With getting almost exclusive use of -N values ( could also get it for -N, but in much smaller quantities).
