All great feedback, I really appreciate all of it. When I came up with Excavate it was more of a mechanic that I thought could be used to combo with other cards, as well as being alright on their own. A combo with landfall or a creature with soulbond, ex. Galvanic Alchemist . @Fallingman, I totally get where your coming from, it does just sort of sit there and do the same thing without really being used by different kinds of creatures for different things. However, that was kind of what I was going for, and thats where the landfall and such would come into the picture.

I was just wondering what you guys thought if it, it's my first time out of the gate in terms of trying to come up with mechanics/keywords, and I thought I would share it and see what the feedback was like.

one thing to note: keyword design is one of the hardest aspects of Magic card design, because of the sheer breadth of responsibilities we put on a keyword's shoulders. it needs to fit on all sorts of different cards, carrying some while synergizing with others in fun neat ways, it needs to be simple enough to store easily in your brain while deep enough to have a lot of design options. they're tempting to jump in to, because you think "hey if I can get one of these then I will have like 20 cards made!" but getting it just right is incredibly difficult. many of the best designers on this forum struggle with it.

120.6. Some effects replace card draws.

Lol @ the duelling smileys.

Yeah I hear that, coming up with this stuff isn't exactly easy. I would love to be a fly on the wall during a WotC development meeting when these things are picthed. Not getting it perfect the first time just makes me want to try harder to nail it down ever more, I'm definitely gonna keep working on it. Thanks to everyone who gave their input, I appreciate it.

Sometimes I imagine what Cisnero's life must be like. I imagine cargo pants - every pocket stuffed with coins. I imagine him (I almost said "him or her" but then I decided his gender with through the randomization of a small metal disk) - I imagine him, shopping, purchasing food, choosing which spot to park in, all through this meticulous flipping process. I imagine him asking a girl out, taking her to have a drink or whatever and then asking if she wants to play this fun game. When she responds "Sure." he removes a single quarter from one of his jingling pockets. Then proceeds to flip it repeatedly while she calls it - until she is able to make up an excuse to leave. Will he respond to this post? Only if the Chaotic Gods of Copper and Nickel deem it so. Someday many years from now, in the Dystopian future world, I'll ride my Billy Idol Unicycle past a bedraggled slumbub - He'll be clad in armor made all of the (now worthless) coins of yesterdecade. He'll grin a shiny grin at me as he flips another coin - and I'll know who it was. How could I not?

I have no idea why that duplicated so many times. But I do indeed quite enjoy the duelling smileys.

Finding land isn't excavation, and I second what Fallingman said about variation in design.

As is my mandate, I will now pay for my negative feedback with positive ideas! How about something like this is:
  • Excavate -- 3, T, Return a land card from your graveyard to your hand: Do X

As a pseudo keyword, you can put it on a variety of things to have varying effects. You can make discarding to pay costs a thing in the set since you have excavators. You can have lands that sac for cool effects, too.

Hope that helps!
My latest set is in public beta! KOR - Kingdoms of Rabiah - Check it out!

Like Uncle Istvan ? Like Rabiah? Like Homelands? Then check out theScion's Parade of Planeswalkers

Got Flavor? Throw it at me in my Gauntlet: theScion vs YMTC thread. Can the combined powers of YMTC defeat our favorite rainbow-faced card crafter?
