I have not played Magic since the late 90s. Can I still use the cards I collected back then? I know there have been a lot of new additions to the game but wanted to know if I have anything to start back up with or not.
Any help would be appreciated!

you can use the cards in Legacy/Vintage tournaments or Casual
very few if any will be Standard legal, if that's what you are asking

Yep that is what I am looking for. I have 300+ cards are they basically worthless?

it depends on the cards some old cards are very valuable, for some you can get a car  check the cards on ebay, what they are going for, to see if you got any gems

Make sure you look up the Oracle wording of your old cards at gatherer.wizards.com to find out what they really do (what it says on the physical card is basically irrelevant (only the name matters)). ~ Tim

That makes no sense to me.
If they spelled the ability out on the card in full then it would not be allowed in a mono-black Commander deck, but because they used a keyword to save space it is allowed?

Yup, just like you can have Birds of paradise  in a mono green deck but not Noble Hierarch  . YAY COLOR IDENTITY
