Hello, it's been a while since I played in any form of tournaments for magic (and even then it was when I just started to play). I'm looking to get back into the swing of standard, and possibly try it out again. As stated in the title, I'm wondering what archetypes are/will be floating around post rotation, and a brief description of each. I am a budget player ($40 or so decks) and I want to see what the current metagame is and what options I have for being competitive.

Before anyone posts, I would like to make one thing clear:
I don't want posts like "lolz, here iz mah deck!!!"

I'm not interested in what your deck looks like. I'm interested in the archetypes themselves. If you link to commonly found cards in each that's appreciated.

Thanks!

Zombies is going to be the archtype to beat immediately after rotation. Right now its Delver and Zombies with a few Naya decks. Building a deck that is truly competetive at the highest levels is going to cost you more than 40 dollars on lands alone.

The cheapest thing you could build right now that people expect to be a player after rotation is a Splinterfright self-mill deck, most of the rares will only cost you 2 dollars (not including lands) and it runs a lot of commons and uncommons. Probably the budget builder's choice of deck. This might even be the best choice for a less than 40 dollars (or close to that)

My suggestion? Buy a box of Return to Ravnica, decide what kind of deck you want to build based on those cards, then come back. And avoid for trading for anything that is from M12 or Scars of Mirrodin block, as those won't be available for standard.

Uhm... where do you get the idea of mono green aggro from? And just because there haven't been tournaments doesn't mean that the pros haven't chimed in. Don't be so results oriented.

I meant $40 or so, meaning it could be higher.... just not by a ton. I've been slowly gathering cards for a while and I do have some "budget options" for other cards (like a playset of Glacial Fortress if  I went U/W). While I know it's not the shock lands, they can still be good mana fixin'. Also I do plan on grabbing a booster box of this set and going from there. I mainly wanted to see what was going on currently and how each deck works. This time I want to see what I'm getting into before I jumped in.

Gaving the core set duals is also good, you would want both those and the shock lands if you want to be competitive in the manabase since the shock lands also let the core set duals come in tapped since they count as both the basics for their respective colours.

How many planeswalkers does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
Spoiler: Show

Better question, what does Nicol Bolas want with the lightbulb?

I was thinking of building U/R around Talrand, Sky Summoner using token spells. I could possibly make it R/W/U, but I would have to make sure I could get the mana base  I needed first (I know that mana is highly important to a deck). Basically I want to make sure that what I build can at least stand up in local places. Obviously after I get some wins under my belt, I should be able to start improving the deck.

This is actually a good call. Talrand, Talrand's Invocation, Lingering Souls, Krenko's Command, Intangible Virtue. Mana would be tough, but it sounds decent.

Its hard to tell you what will win consistently, as there are a lot of unknowns in the upcoming standard (like what will best beat zombies)

I'll probably get a decklist posted for Talrand. I have 2 of him already, so they won't be a problem. Should I stick to r/u to help keep the cost of lands down, or go for r/w/u? Also what inspired me the most to build this deck was actually the Goblin Electromancer From the izzet deck.
Also with the electromancer would you say it's better to run Rewind over Dissipate ? Or should I run both?
