Has there ever been a good five mana counterspell? I can think of good four mana ones, but not five.

Force of Will , but I'm not sure anyone in the history of magic has ever paid the five mana.

Flag Captain_Kidney September 17, 2012 12:35 PM PDT
GACK!!

That is all.
Flag magicpablo666 September 17, 2012 12:37 PM PDT
At least it has a cool name.

I found a Newt Gingrich signed Gavel in the back of a Goodwill one time. It is my one prized possession.

It happens more than you'd think.

Traumatic Visions is quite good and underrated in multicolored EDH. To be fair, though, that's only because it has basic landcycling as an option. But that makes it amazing in EDH.

I actually used Traumatic Visions in Standard.

I wasn't playing much Standard at the time. Good on you

I've noticed this, and it's annoying. New players don't like using strategy, so nobody else should either. It takes too much skill to play against counter spells so Wizards seems to have just decided to totally nerf counters and make the game entirely about creatures fighting.

poor counterspells. :c
Flag GoTexans September 17, 2012 5:14 PM PDT
Kinda ok in limited.

This is a wasted uncommon slot.

Two words: Play aggro. You will get a threat through, and the counter player won't be able to do a thing about it. Counterintuitive (pardon the pun), but spamming works.

Yeah, this is really unfair to control decks.

I'm quite fond of Desertion , but not so much for the counterspell part, more for the can't be disenchanted Control Magic part.

Aside from Force of Will, Decree of Silence and Draining Whelk both saw varying levels of play.

There's more to control than permission.

Besides, baiting counters is hardly the most strategic aspect of the game.
