I hate it when this happens. The set isn't even out yet. All I have to say is " gross  ." Congratulations. You can now make endless copies of whatever you want. Army of Autochthons  ? Check. Legion of Lieges  ? Heck, you can even copy your opponents' critters, then build an army of THEM! And all it took was one little card...

Sorry man, a bunch of other people beat you to the idea. In nearly every thread for a card with Populate, someone has mentioned Cackling Counterpart < /span>  , which can do the same thing better and do it in Standard.

Oh no! Now I can run a deck full of Clone  s, Phantasmal Image  s, Phyrexian Metamorph  s, and Cackling Counterpart s. Wait... I could already do that. (and I've already been drooling over populate+ Cackling COunterpart  )

Cackling Counterpart , Seance  and Back from the Brink  all do this in Standard and have all been discussed to some amount or other in other threads about Populate...

It's okay, you can break Populate however you want. Wizards fixed it with Detention Sphere.
You fell victim to one of the classic blunders - The most famous of which is "never get involved in an thread with GM_Champion" - but only slightly less well-known is this: "Never go in against AzureShade when card design is on the line!

Populate isn't a very "breakable" mechanic, because it's simply that- a mechanic. It's a source of card leverage, to undo card disadvantage or generate card advantage. It's an advantage engine which you have to work for, which last I checked isn't broken.

Which, to be fair, is every Magic card ever.
Originally it had to deal with tokens or counters, but stuff like Cackling Counterpart fixed that.
