Do you have access to a list of all couter types? There are so many of them. So typical and mentioned in rules such as +1/+1, -1/-1, loyalty or poison and some rare and weird such as eyeball counters .
Say I have an imaginary card that reads:
"Choose a type of counter. Put one counter of that type on every permanent."

I would not recommend printing that card, because there are a LOT of counter types over the years.

Common types include:
+1/+1 counters
-1/-1 counters
age counters
fade counters
loyalty counters
poison counters
time counters

Oddball ones include:
+1/+0 and +0/+1 counters
-1/-0 and -0/-1 counters
+1/+2 counters
+2/+2 counters
+2/0 and +0/+2 counters
-2/-2 counters
blaze counters
devotion counters
divinity counters
eyeball counters
flood counters
mannequin counters
mire counters
phylactery counters
polyp counters
tower counters
training counters
velocity counters

the list goes on...

The different types are not listed in the CR, but if they were, I think that that would be fine. It would work the same way Adaptive Automaton works. There are just as many creature types as counter types.

I got this list by looking for instances of "counter on" or "counters on" and taking the preceding word (and throwing out things like "a" or "each").

If that card were to exist, it would require a list like the above in the CompRules. However, that imaginary card is a really bad idea, so it'll hopefully never be printed.

Some issues I see with that list (some of them from the missing M13 update):


Also, there are some counters in use on non-traditional cards (e.g. Bant , but I guess those are outside the scope of the list.

I did notice that my search failed to find poison (that uses a different template) and the +2/+0 counters from Frankenstein's Monster .

The problem with the specific card idea you posted is that most counter types either only work with creatures, or are used to mark the effect of a specific card and are meaningless otherwise.

Aside from the +2/+0 counter from Frankenstein's Monster that you mentioned, there is also the -2/-1 counters from Contagion .

Ah, thank you. Contagion says "counters among", so I didn't catch it. The other cards that uses that only use +1/+1 or -1/-1 counters.
