is it possible to be in the orzhov syndicate and NOT be a horrible greedy fiend? cuz looking at all the guilds it seems the personalities of the people in them represent the worst possible personality of the two color combinations. same for azorius. can a person be apart of it and not be a tyrannical beauracrat?

Well you have to realize that the guilds exist to keep the guilds in power. And that those worst elements tend to be the ones that keep them in power. They've lasted for 10,000 years, which is far longer then any goverment on Earth in all of human history.
But yes, an Orzhov can act in a benevolent, kindhearted, and charitable nature. The Orzhov care about money, and if you can get money and power through legitment means, there's nothing stopping them. It's just that most Orzhov rather take the easy route.
… and then, the squirrels came.

I thought the bulk of the Orzhov guild was gullible suckers? You know, like most other pyramid schemes? I think it's probably pretty tricky to be a higher-up in the Orzhov and not a horrible greedy person.

The cards we see (and the stories we read) are about the most identifiable qualities of the guilds. Not every Orzhov member is a terrible greed consumed person, not every Azorius member is a cold lawmage, not every Selesnyan is a mindless cultist. Just the ones we see because extremes are what make for the best cards.
"The fuel on which science runs is ignorance. Science is like a hungry furnace that must be fed logs from the forests of ignorance that surround us. In the process, the clearing we call knowledge expands, but the more it expands, the longer its perimeter and the more ignorance comes into view." -Matt Ridley, Genome

And best stories. Stories that go 'Got up, went down to the cathedral to do some cleaning, got some lunch from that Golgari guy Gregg, went for a stroll, met up with Jim for some tea...' etc. are not the most exciting to read. Often you get one or two 'normal' people in a story as protagonists drawn into the insane machinations of one of the unhinged brigade, but otherwise the er, 'interesting' characters are more interesting.

Bastards and their actions are easier to design cards for in a combat simulation game than nice people and their cheritable deeds.

... I'd read it. Could be right up there with A day in the life of Obstinate Baloth.

In fairness, there is some lie to that because they certainly manage to find ways to glorify Selesnya without making them all braindead cultists. They seem to be the only guild that gets good PR too...

Those are bold words, Barrinellos.

Well, to be fair, white and green are the 'nice' colors, so there's something to say about that. Its easier to glorify them.
And a big part of the 'new' Selesnya's image seems to be "Look how pretty we're making Ravnica, we're not the sociopathic mind-rapists you remember." It's exactly what you said, PR. They're actively trying to make themselves look good because when the Guildpact went down, and the guilds were exposed for what they really were, its the Selesnyans whose reputation was the most damaged. Not many other guilds had their leaders dragged into the street and lynched.

@MarkXero: Took me forever to figure out your sig says "debt is savings".
@OP: Well, the guilds exist for the guilds. But individuals in the guilds can be okay. Agrus Kos isn't a fascist, for instance.
Clever deduction Watson! Maybe you can explain why Supergirl is trying to kill me.

I'm going to go with 'Yeah - I intended it to be a clever comment on modern economics' and not at all 'I lazily put the Orzhov line "Debt is Salvation" into Google Translate...'
