Hi Everyone!

I just want to ask  a little bit of something about lifelink. So here are the scenarios:

First Scenario:
Markov Patrician(3/1 creature with lifelink) comes into play. At combat phase, Markov Patrician attacks, the opponent blocks with Duty-Bound Dead(0/2  creature with exalted and regenerate). Opponent did not use regenerate, so Duty-Bound Dead dies. How much life does the owner of Markov Patrician gain? 3? or Only 2(because 2 is the toughness of Duty-Bound Dead)?

Second Scenario:
Markov Patrician(3/1 creature with lifelink) comes into play. Owner of Markov Patrician pumps it with Mark of the Vampire(Enchanted creature gets +2/+2 and has lifelink.) At combat phase, Markov Patrician attacks, the opponent blocks with Duty-Bound Dead(0/2  creature with exalted and regenerate). Opponent did not use regenerate, so Duty-Bound Dead dies. How much life does the owner of Markov Patrician gain? 5(because 3+2 power of Markov Patrician)? or 10(because 3+2=5 which is the power of Markov Patrician x 2(Rule 702.14e)? Or only 2(because 2 is the toughness of Duty-Bound Dead)?

Thank you very much! If possible please also site references so we can understand throughly.Wink

1. creatures don't pull punches, the Patrician dealt 3 damage, you gained 3 life
(regeneration wouldn't change this)

2. 5 damage means 5 life
multiple instances of lifelink don't stack
(keep in mind that cards similar to Lifelink DO stack)

At Scenario Number 1:

Let's disregard regeneration, isn't it that the player who controls Markov Patrician only gain 2 life, since Markov Patrician only damaged 2 on Duty Bound Dead causing it to die. The other 1 damage was wasted because Duty Bound Dead blocked it(and Markov has no Trample).

No.  The Patrician dealt 3 damage to the blocker.  Attackers  deal damage equal to their power, and the damage is not limited to the blocking creature's toughness.

Three damage was dealt, so you gain 3 life.

as I said, creatures don't pull punches, they always deal as much damage as they have power, regardless of how much toughness/life/loyalty whatever they are hitting has

so Markov Patrician will always deal 3 damage, because that's its power

I'll add that for Scenario 2, the rule you quoted says that multiple instances of lifelink don't stack
