First we went to Bant and met Lisha.
Then we went to Esper and met Crucius. After that, we went to Grixis to avoid the Bone Heaps. Next stop; Jund, to witness the Shriek of Flame. "Dragons don't go peacefully into death. When an ancient has become to feeble to defend its territory, it goes out with a bang. In a ritual known as the Shriek of Flame, a dragon finds an unstable volcano, flies high above the crater, then plunges into a shrieking death-dive straight into the magma. A fiery cataclysm erupts on impact, and many lowland groups believe that all volcanic eruptions are the result of the death of a dragon." Your mission, should you choose to accept it (and really, why wouldn't you) is to design a card that you feel captures the flavor of a Shriek of Flame. DESIGN GUIDELINES 1. Your card must be red. It may be any other colors in addition to red. 1b. Your card is allowed to use non-Jund colors. The Shriek of Flame isn't a character or phenomenon exclusive to pre-Conflux Alara, so if you want to design a card that might take place in a post-Conflux world, you may do so should you desire. 2. Your card must involve dragons in some way, if not in mechanics, than in flavor. Given the description of Shriek of Flame, I would encourage you to design an instant or sorcery, though if you feel you can somehow design an enchantment or land or creature that captures the feel, you may do so at your own peril. I will tease you relentlessly if your design is off the mark th, so beware. D:< CONTEST RULES 1. You have two days to design. 2. You can only enter once. 3. You may change your design any time before the deadline. If you have any further questions, feel fry to ask. Good luck and have fun!

I think the rules can be bent so that "red" means "red color identity."
Jesus, I'm late.
ENTRY PERIOD IS OVER, VOTING BEGINS Yes, I did in fact mean red color identity. No, I did not make that clear, I am very sowwy. @Dr.Demento For your disregard of the rules you get a stern finger wag. ![]() Don't let it happen again.
VOTING RULES
1. You have two days. 2. You get one vote. 3. You can vote if you didn't enter. At the end of the voting period, I will announce my picks (JUDGE'S VOTE) and tally the 3 highest scoring entries (PEOPLE'S VOTE) and then we can have a sexy party. Good luck everyone.
ChaosLight gets my vote. I originally designed something very close to this, and changed it. I feel like this is a solid way to go.
Doctor D. . . Imi was a close second, and I debated for a while about how I feel about Transform Lands, but this one works flavorfully, so it works for me. My only problem with both of these cards are Changelings. Golly, I loathe them, so. . .
HairlessThoctar, but I feel bad because this design was pretty apparent, and you always get the first design in. A lot of people went in a similar path to you, but in the end your was the cleanest and probably most flavorful. Still, a fun card, Super Fling Away!
Oh, and Pablo totally broke the rules first, and then Imi half-broke the rules, and then me. So I should share that finger wag.
I vote for Dream_Spinner's placeholder submission.
I can vote for myself? Wow~~
Nah, Dream_Spinner Chaoslight
It's a hard decision between Imi and vlord, but I guess I only get one vote
Both cards are flavorful and mechanically interesting.vlord + It partially works around the inherent shortcomings of enchantments. + Equally effective on either your creatures or your opponent's. - No change to board state until the enchanted creature dies. Imidazoline + Dragoncycling? Yes please. + Add ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() is just the kind of ability that looks too good to print, but actually works.- Everyone and their mother would combo this with Dragon Hatchling I ended up selecting vlord's card because it just grabbed me better. There's something about that card that makes me need to make it work in a deck, regardless of how well it might actually play. Imi, I realize that my reason for selecting vlord's card over yours is a personal one. But I really can't find anything mechanically wrong with your card! I hope it's ok that I decided to listen to my gut rather than base my vote on logic here.
voting is like innately personal; it's a personal decision, it's not more or less valid depending on why you did it
vlord's is nice but it doesn't work; the Aura is put into the graveyard before the triggered ability resolves all the cards are very similar though, so i'm just going to vote for vlord
Yeah, the new text would work. I decided to ignore the rules issue because the intent was clear.
VOTING PERIOD IS OVER.
I will begin to tally the votes and give out the judge's picks.
THE PEOPLE'S VOTE
Huh... Third place There is no third place, too many ties. Second place, 6 way tie :/ Bay Falconer Dr Demento myself Febb Imi Zokorad Dream Spinner +20 BRAGGING RIGHTS each First place, 2 way tie, two votes each Vlord Chaos Light +30 BRAGGING RIGHTS each Well that was... odd. I'm noticing that a lot of the submissions were very similar. I'd like to apologise for picking something with such an narrow design space. There were a lot of interesting submissions but a lot of people had similar ideas and I really don't want my contests to come down to whoever got here first has a better chance of submitting the design they wanted. I'll try to pick subjects more open to interpretation in the future. That being said, I will live up to my vow to give everyone criticism. Spoiler: Show @CKY Was it your intention for this to hit lands? Even with the very precise additional costs, I'm not sure I'm comfortable with such a cheap reset button. Great flavor though, even the flavor text. @Nukeshooter I see how the flashback 'mode' is capturing the flavor of a volcanic explosion, but why not make that the default mode? I'm not sure what the flashback is doing other than adding value for the sake of value. @Vlord. That's a tasty Pyrohemia @Zokorad Eww, that template... "Shriek of Flame deals damage equal to the sacrificed creature's power plus three to each opponent and each creature an opponent controls." The black feels unnecessary. @Chaos Light I don't have much to say here. This is a really good card. @Tevish At first I was going to chastise you for not making it care about dragons, but then I realize that this is going to miss most every dragon because of the non-flying clause. I'm not sure if that was deliberate on your part or just making use of red's non-flying @Dream Spinner Why didn't you make this an actual submission, it's wonderful!!! @MagicPablo That is really darned weird :/ This feels like it would have been a real card circa Legends. I feel like the pseudo-flashback should be more expensive. @Bay Falconer I liked Ooze Garden @Bowshewicz I would make it so that the land gains a memory counter of some kind, like Xathrid Gorgon @Imi Fan-freaking-tastic. I have nothing bad to say about this. @Altimis Kind of **** that it only hits one player. I can't help but imagine that an eruption would hit more than one person. @ARSchuster I'm imagining a scenario where someone doom blades your dragon in response to this, and it's hilarious. You get points in my book for aggressively costed land destruction. @Dr Demento Make it three mana! :U Seems pretty darn good. Very low opportunity cost. I'd play it. @Febb I don't get it. @Confused as Usual Not a fan of the negative tension, but in a deck that wants this to work (read, casual, edh, etc) the count is probably going to be high enough to still be relevant. JUDGE'S VOTE Third place, +10 BRAGGING RIGHTS Chaos Light I feel this was the best example of numerous "if a dragon dies, sac a mountain" cards in this round. Second place, +20 BRAGGING RIGHTS Tevish Szat I love how this suggests that you play without a lot of dragons (because they'll all dodge the damage) without explicitly saying so. Brilliant. First place, +30 BRAGGING RIGHTS Imi Its hard for me to articulate how sad I am that this isn't a real card, but I hope this picture helps. Spoiler: Show ![]() Honorable mention, +5 BRAGGING RIGHTS Dream Spinner Seriously, why didn't you submit for realsies. ): Congratulations to all of our winners, and thank you all for participating. If you have any suggestions or criticisms I would love to hear them!
my card was a play on words wtf how do u not get it
Firstly, as far as I can tell, a Sheikh is a term for a respected elder in Islamic communities. I still don't get the alleged play on words. Am I equipped an elderly Arab and using him as a club?
Secondly, are you really necroing a thread to chastise me for not getting a pun that I still don't understand that didn't even fit the contest criteria?
