I love Magic. Have since I was a kid but I keep getting discouraged and leaving the game. I always come back every couple years or so. This time I decided to go all in. Now while Im not quite sure what I mean by that I know I want to avoid the mistakes Ive made in the past which might have contributed to me getting discouraged with the game.

If you were starting fresh what would you not do this time around? Pretend we're in that movie Groundhog Day.

My first deck was a green-blue deck that relied on throwing away things ( Wild Mongrel , Crashing Centaur ) for threshold.

After I played a lot more I've become a lot more open about playing any colors and strategies at various levels of seriousness, but I wish my Magic childhood had been more about big rare exciting Dragons and giant tribal boardstates. I mean, my rare was old boring Stone-Tongue Basilisk .

I don't really get how you "start over" in Magic. Unless you were playing in high level tournaments and stuff, there's nothing really to take back, just keep playing.

Wild Mongrel among others was a card used in competitive madness decks. Although I guess you're right to say that it wasn't a great idea using that with threshold.

Last time I was really into Magic was Lorwyn block so all my cards are mostly obsolete. Hard to walk into FNM with my Boggarts!

My first deck was the Pulverize precon from Scourge. I like the deck, but it wasn't a good one to start out the game with. So I'd recomend you know stick to more basic decks (the Intro Packs these days are crap competitively, but are simple enough to learn on) until you have a basic handle on the rules. I didn't really start doing well until I got my second deck, Sacrificial Bam from Mirrodin. I was then able to do better at the game, and thus learn the rules more clearly, and thus be able to stomach more complicated interactions necessary for decks like Pulverize.

Thank you Blitzschnell for the awesome banner!

Biggest mistake: Booster packs.

Get a database. Use it to build decks. Build deck for the cost of a fistfull of booster packs. Win.

Would of started drafting a long time ago.  Also if we are talking about starting over from when I strated, I would of bought a heck load of Alpha, Beta, and Arabian Nights.  Its mind boggling how those prices have shot up from back then.

Still good for casual play. Hell, you can have loads of fun using Ginger Angel to recur Crib Swap .

Life is just a resource, not something you should focus on. My first deck was a ton of life gain and drain, that was kind of dumb.

I would have also just started earlier. Not quite sure it fits into your question but I wish I would've played Magic in highschool or earlier. I feel like I'm getting into the game late now.
