Hi all. I am new to magic and have been playing with friends (and getting slaughtered). I decided to come up with a deck to play instead of just using random cards. Here is what I have so far. I would love to get feedback on how I could improve it without breaking the bank. I placed some other cards I was thinking about in the side board. Thanks in advance! 2 x Nefarox, Overlord of Grixis 4 x Duress 4 x Duty-Bound Dead 4 x Tormented Soul 4 x Doom Blade 4 x Knight of Infamy 2 x Ring of Xathrid 3 x Sign in Blood 4 x Murder 4 x Vampire Nighthawk 20 x Swamp 1 x Falkenrath Aristocrat 2 x Mountain 2 x Evolving Wilds Sideboard 1 x Olivia Voldaren 4 x Diabolic Revelation 1 x Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker 1 x Gilded Lotus 2 x Gem of Becoming 1 x Drowned Catacomb 4 x Morgue Toad 1 x Island

I'd cut the red and Falkenrath Aristocrat . I'd recommend Inquisition of Kozilek over Duress . Up the Sign in Blood to four. Lashwrithe would be really good for your Tormented Soul s. Skinrender is pretty good. You could play some swamps matter cards too like Mind Sludge and Corrupt .

Sleepings suggestions are decent, but I'm more interested in hearing what you want to do with the deck. You have some great rares that don't go very well with the main deck right now. Do you want to play Nicol Bolas or the B/R vampires? If so, the deck needs to change fairly drastically (that doesn't necessarily mean expensive).
If you want to go monoblack, do you want to keep with the exalted theme? Exalted can be strong, but it also has some glaring weaknesses that need to be filled.
Finally, are the games you play with your friends multiplayer or do you just play duels?
D&D rules were never meant to exist without the presence of a DM. RAW is a lie.

I guess I was going for an exalted theme. What would be the glaring weaknesses and how can I fill them? I Wouldn't mind seeing an example vampire deck and a deck built around Nicol Bolas if you have any examples though.
I play duels with friends.

If you want to stay exalted, the suggestions Sleeping gave are probably just fine so long as you stay within your budget. You said that you are getting slaughtered, however, and Sleepings suggestions probably wouldn't change that. What is killing you or stopping you from killing your opponents?
To get ideas for what a black/red vampire deck would look like, you could look at www.wizards.com/magic/tcg/productarticle... I wouldn't actually build that deck or even buy it really, but it gives you a good idea of what Innistrad block vampires looks like as a deck & you can decide whether you want to go that direction from there.
For a Nicol Bolas deck, we're probably thinking lots of control. Burn in red, card drawing, counters and/or bounce in blue, more creature kill in black. Since you only have one planeswalker, you'd have to have some amount of tutoring like Diabolic Tutor . The M13 Bolas cards are a great starting point as well, Augur of Bolas , Disciple of Bolas and Mindclaw Shaman . Gem of Becoming also helps but you'd have to experiment some to know if you need more than what you have already. Basically, you keep destroying everything the opposing player shows you until Bolas comes out and then you try to lock down the game from there. Even with the tutors, I'd probably want a second Bolas if I was going to make the deck, though.
The weaknesses of Exalted strategies are that they force you to overcommit to a board and tend to have individually weak creatures. You can't block if your opponents can blunt your offense or you'll lose the creatures that are your whole strategy.
D&D rules were never meant to exist without the presence of a DM. RAW is a lie.

I am getting destroyed on a random deck I made with my friends cards not with this new deck. I haven't tried playing it yet. I bought a deck builder's toolkit and a couple of boosters and bought some singles from my local card shop to fill in playsets. So with Sleeping's suggestions something like this maybe: 2 x Nefarox, Overlord of Grixis 4 x Duty-Bound Dead 4 x Tormented Soul 4 x Doom Blade 4 x Knight of Infamy 4 x Sign in Blood 4 x Murder 4 x Vampire Nighthawk 24 x Swamp 1 x Skinrender 2 x Lashwrithe 4 x Inquisition of Kozilek Sideboard 4 x Mind Sludge 4 x Corrupt 3 x Skinrender 2 x Ring of Xathrid 2 x Servant of Nefarox
