So I've been playing limited a bit and have found that Disciple of Bolas  is more of a beating than I had thought. I also was looking through my cards and rumaged past my Foil Skirsdag High Priest  (the only copy I have) and thought that the interaction between these 2 cards might actually warrent a deck design. If you add Geralf's Messenger  in the mix, and some other creatures you have the potential to get a 5/5 demon turn 4 and gain 3 life/cards. Definitely running Diregraf Ghoul  s as a one drop or at least Gravecrawler  . What do you guys think?

Sounds good but you can't really build a deck off a single card. Redundancy is needed. Skirsdag High Priest is the Wild Mongrel  but he needs an Aquamoeba  .

So considering the secondary win condition, I'd consider attacking the hand with cards like Duress  or add a Lilliana of the Veil  here or there. I'm also planning for when SoM and M12 rotate out, so I'm for the moment not going to consider cards there, but will definitely take advice for until that happens. Considering cards that are splashable "might" be an option ( Thragtusk  and Falkenrath Aristocrat  ). Maybe I should just have this thread moved to the standard deck help or we can discuss what we think Disciple of Bolas is Capable of in the future? :D

I just played an opponent who used Disciple of Bolas . It makes me think. This card vaguely seems like it's waiting to be cracked open. It seems to be good with creatures with ETB effects such as Snapcaster Mage  . Oh, Skinrender  . Solemn Simulacrum  I think we'd like to draw at least 3 cards from its effect. (like a Concentrate  ) Skinrender counts, Solemn Simulacrum sort of counts. Thragtusk Geralf's Messenger (it works on the mana curve, T3 Messenger, T4 Disciple) Phylactery Lich  Treacherous Pit-Dweller  - go ahead have a vanilla 5/4, I just drew 4 cards and gained 4 life. Veilborn Ghoul

Geralf's Messenger would come out right before the Disciple and would garner us 3 cards and the guy back as well.

I really think the card is best served as a pseudo Blue Sun's Zenith  for midrange decks like the Rock. Sac a Thragtusk, draw 5. Sac a Solemn etc... I originally was thinking I wanted to smoothly curve into it on turn 4 or 5 by playing threats like Messenger and Phyrexian Rager as precursors. I even tried it in decks with Rancor  . If you're drawing 3-5 cards off it, you want to be finding answers, not more threats. Zombies is the exception because it fuels Blood Artist well. Still, I don't really want more than 1 copy in that deck either.

i'm pretty sure he's best served running in a zombies deck as a 1 or 2 of, since so many creatures have some sort of recursion or just the sheer value you can in the deck with it.

Messenger + Disciple is pretty disgusting. Garruk PH + Disciple seems like midrange goodstuff fun.

I don't think he does anything in this format, not compared to some of the other options. I could see replacing Phyrexian Metamorphs with him in Zombies post-rotation though.
It's really not even about giving niche cards to black.
It should be about giving black cards to Niche.

It was revealed to me in a dream. All the cards were in my dream except for three slots which I plugged in as Vault Skirge.
FULL DISCLOSURE: The dream was post AVR so there was a copy of Slayer's Stronghold. I decided to keep it pre AVR in my post here.
EDIT: I just remembered. The Skirges might have been 2x Whipflare and 1x something else, probably War and Peace.
EDIT2: Currently 4-0 in my first four games with this. My opponents have been very angry. I fought off a Wurmcoil from Grixis for six turns before I found my second Dispatch. Jeez, I can do a lot of damage.
EDIT3: Streak broken. Lost to an unexpected Overrun.  Cracking a Shrine for 10 wasn't enough.
