been really bored recently and was looking through M13 and saw the card fungal sprouting . i got my hopes up that maybe they would bring some new fungi to the magic universe. but in the meantime while i wait i decided to create some cards. i came up with a kind of lord for fungi creatures, thallid overmind, as well as some story to explain where he came from.
alright, if you love fungus creatures, especially the thallids, you should know that Thelon of Havenwood created the thallids. so i made a story to the creation of the thallids (making this up as i type lol).
it all starts when thelon of havenwood feared a impending invasion. with nothing else, he turned to magic for the protection his people. he wanted a creature. a creature that was strong and yet bonded to the forest and helped it. as he prepped the spell, he thought of the idea of a fungi like creature, able to feed on the dead and nourish the forest. the creation of this creature came at a great cost. he added fungal matter and casted his spell. a flash engulfed the room and than a small green creature laid in front of him. being no bigger than his head thelon was discouraged and enraged. how would this thing protect him and his people? temped to end its life, he felt sorrow and remorse. he created this being and it was now his. he picked up the creature and swiftly took it to the forest. he placed it on the forest floor and began to watch it react to the forest. the creature wandered around touching the dead matter and began to rapidly grow. startled thelon fell as the creature doubled in size as it consumed thelons weight in dead matter. he smiled upon this new life, knowing it had a great purpose. he kelt on the forest floor as the creature stummbled towards thelong. he looked at the creature and smiled saying "you are my creation. as i am a creation of the forest you are as well. you will now be called thallid, the first." (thallid after the common family of fungi in the havenwood forest.)
taking thallid, the first back to his home, thelon began to research and teach the fungus creature everything about the forest and the rules of life. as thallid, the first grew so did its knowledge. watching everything it saw, it was learning at an alarming rate and thelon knew this. soon the creature could speak as well as thelon did. fearing how his people would handle this thelon took the creature to the forest. as thallid, the first was left in the forest, it consumed more and more dead matter growing half the height of the trees of havenwood's forest. during this time also, thallid, the first bonded to the forest more than any elf could ever. he drew his power from the very land and trees in it.
soon the weather began to drastically change and the threat of the invasion was closer than ever as nearby tribes of other creatures were being overrun. thelon went to the forest and spoke to his creation. he told the thallid the reason why he was created. understanding his purpose thallid, the first knew what he had to do. as time went on, thallid the first grew bigger and stronger and did something not even thelon would have thought of. thallid, the first began to create creatures in his own image. the first creatures being thallid s. shortly after he created more complex thallids each with a special role. quickly, thallid, the first, came to realize he could control his creations with his mind as if the creature was part of thallid, the first. releasing this thallid, the first changed his name. he became thallid overmind.
pretty much this was a story in a story in a story :P and i was making this up as i went along so if you think its not very good well now you know lol. anyways, after this the events of what happens follow the magic: the gathering thallid story. Thallid Overmind Creature - Fungus Fungus spells you cast cost less Other Fungus creatures you control get +1/+2 and saproling creatures you control get +1/+2 At the beginning of your upkeep, put two 1/1 green Saproling creature token onto the battlefield for each fungus creature you control. "i was created in his image as they were created in mine." 5/6
Thallid Propagator Creature - Fungus At the beginning of your upkeep, put a spore counter on thallid propagator. Remove three spore counters from thallid proagator: Put a 1/1 green Saproling creature token onto the battlefield.
, sacrifice a Saproling: if an effect from a fungus creature you control would put one or more saproling tokens onto the battfield, it puts twice that many saproling tokens instead until the end of the turn. Activate this ability only once each turn. 2/2
Fungal Symbiosis Enchantment - aura As an additional cost to cast Fungal Symbiosis, tap 1 Fungus creature on the battlefield under your control. Enchant land Whenever enchanted land you control is tapped, Put X 1/1 green Saproling creature token onto the battlefield, where X is half the number of each other land you control that share the same name as enchanted land.
Spreading Mycelium Tribal Sorcery - Fungus As an additional cost to cast Spreading Mycelium, tap a fungus creature you control and sacrifice a saproling. Search your library for up to two basic land cards, reveal those cards, and put one onto the battlefield tapped and the other into your hand. Then shuffle your library Spore burst Tribal enchantment – fungus Sacrifice a saproling: put X spore counters on each fungus creature you control, where X is the number of fungus creatures you control. "your death feeds the needs of many"
flooded havenwood forest land As flooded havenwood forest enters the battlefield, you may tap a fungus creatures you control. If you don't, flooded havenwood forest comes into play tapped.
add or to your mana pool Not even the catastrophic floods seemed to harm the fungi. They just seemed to feed on those that died, growing in numbers.
thallid sporeswarmer At the beginning of your upkeep, put a spore counter on thallid sporeswarmer (max 6). Remove three spore counters from thallid sporeswarmer: Put a 1/1 green Saproling creature token onto the battlefield
, sacrifice a saproling and remove all spore counters from thallid sporeswarmer: put X spore counter on each fungus creature you control equal to the number of spore counters that were on thallid sporeswarmer. 1/4 thallid sporebearer creature - fungus defender At the beginning of your upkeep, put a spore counter on thallid sporebearer. Remove three spore counters from thallid sporebearer: Put a 1/1 green Saproling creature token onto the battlefield
sacrifice a saproling: search your library for a fungus creature, reveal it, then shuffle your library and put that card on top of it. "the spores from my first thallid could become any type of fungi the overmind wanted." - Thelon of Havenwood 0/3

Thallid Overmind is a bit over powered... the other tribe members costing less is pretty good. Most lords only give thier tribe +1/+1 but I guess the /+2 is pretty good but since he is a fungus he should only give other fungus the boost ya know lol. His final ability is what I feel is what makes him over powered. If he only had that final ability he would be great, but with the boost and the costing less effect, this guy is a simple army win for just maybe make some of his abilities for another card??? The Thallid Propagator is also a bit over powered. Seeing as he also creates a quick army with such a minor cost, especially with Thallid Overmind. I mean if you made Propagator a lord as well and just gave him Overmind's final ability that would bring balance to the tribe. Fungul Symbiosis is WAY too powerful for an enchanted land. Just think of how if you had about just 8 lands (especially seeing as this is green we're talking about) that just gave you 8 1/1 tokens each time you tapped that land to play another spells like the above creatures. It creates an army too quick. Spreading Mycelium is a really good card, no objections :D Spore Burst is okay I guess but really specific to only a few cards like the Propagator. Again with Propagator to bring balance maybe have it require more counters to use its ability and/or sacrifice it when activating it. thallid sporeswarmer is okay but could be simplified to sacrficing himself to put those X tokens on the field. thallid sporebearer is really good to get that lord or something out however with its first ability along with the second again like the other cards it just brings out the most powerful of creatures with relative easy by sacrificing a token you easily produce in the same turn. All in all I like the concept and story. Its just that this tribe is over powered with the ability to easily and quickly build up a massive and powerful army within a few turns where a single creature in this tribe is so much of a threat they would all end up being rare or uncommon at the least. Try balancing the cards or divide up their abilities into other cards (which would give you more creatures to use for the tribe :D ). I also think they're too powerful especially for thier CMC as some of the most powerful of spells only cost cards that only cost at best give a slight boost. My Master of the Pearl Trident is a simple merfolk lord and already I can see how he could be a threat. Not criticizing at all, I really like the general idea, but Magic Cards are generally more balanced. Hope this helps

Thelon of Havenwood is powerful but balanced because it's only good if you have in the deck as well and the fact that it's a Legendary creature so you can only use its ability on its own rather than have a whole bunch of them. If this creature is killed by something like Doom Blade all of its effects wear off but if you have a back up in the deck you still have another chance for it.

Fungus grows where the land is left untainted and unmaintained. Why never something that reflects that? Very Real-life Fungus Creature At the end of each opponent's turn, put a 1/1 Saproling creature token onto the battlefield for each untapped Forest you control that wasn't tapped for mana this turn. Very Real-life Fungus Challenge Whenever you tap a Forest for mana, sacrifice a Saproling. If you do, that Forest produces instead.

i was thinking about making a card like the second one but it being green, there is plenty of ramp already. it went like this: giving back enchantment - aura target land when target land becomes tapped for mana, you may sacrifice any number of saprolings (max 4.) add X to your mana pool where X equals the number of saprolings sacrificed this way. but it seemed a little too strong since, like i said, green already has plenty of ramp.
