I had a match with my buddy the other day and I had an asceticism on the field. I went to play a creature and he tried to cancel it, saying it was still a spell and not a creature yet. I didnt think it was right, but I didnt want to start an argument so I just let it slide. What's the ruling on a situation like that?

Your opponent is correct. "Creatures" only exist on the battlefield, anywhere else they are referred to as "creature cards" or "creature spells".
