I got my hands on a portuguese Phyrexian Obliterator the other day and was wondering...
How do you guys feel about these? No one I know cares if I use them, most people I play with don't care as long as I recite to them the english version. I have never met someone who doesnt believe me, or someone who demands I show them an english version. I also have never heard of a rule requiring only english cards in a deck.
I collect them for novelty value, I like to add flair to my decks. Just as I know lots of people do. My local shop is selling a foil Korean Avacyn for $70, that shows there is demand for foreign cards. Do you guys collect them at all? What are your thoughts on foreign cards in general?

In competitive play it isn't a problem because you should know most of the cards in the format, or at least the tournament-worthy ones. In casual play you can just take somebody's word. Even if you demanded oracle wording, a lot of people have mobile devices that they can use to easily reference that on Gatherer or Magiccards.info.
I think they look pretty neat. I've always liked how Asian languages looked. I don't go out of my way to find such things though, and own very few myself.

I have a decent amount of Russian cards and am quite fond of them.

Other people seem to like them, but I've never seen the appeal, personally. The only foreign Magic single I have is a French Overabundance , and the only reason I got it was because the trader didn't mention it was French--if he had, I probably wouldn't have gotten it.
And so people say to me, "How do I know if a word is real?" You know, anyone who's read a children's book knows that love makes things real. If you love a word, use it! That makes it real. Being in the dictionary is an artificial distinction; it doesn't make the word any more real than any other word. If you love a word, it becomes real. --Erin McKean, Redefining the Dictionary

It's all a preference, personally If I'm buying card and have the option of foreign or native for the same price, I will always go foreign. If it's a popular card or one I am particularly fond of I might pay additional money for the foreign version if it's lets say only 10% more.

I mainly like foreign cards for the variety. I would prefer a deck that was half German and half English to one that was either all English or all German. Promos and alternate art are even better though.

Depends on the language. If its German or French or Spanish I'll have some hope of deciphering enough at a glance to remember what the card does, and I'm fine with that. But staring down Chinese or the like will make me have to think, and I'd prefer it wasn't. I have a single Chinese Immerwolf in my Werewolf deck, because that's what was available for trade (and they traded it to me at a lower value). So the odds of that specific Immerwolf coming out are lower. And I have a Chinese Thragtusk on order, because it was cheaper.

This is the main reason I run them, I also want to be unique. Every card game, mmo, anything I play I try to distinguish myself from every other player. I know that the chances of running into someone with a Portuguese phyrexian obliterator is highly unlikely. For this reason I try to load my deck up with foils alt arts and foreign cards. Make myself as unique as possible.
Does anyone have similar thoughts?
