Does it have a shot at being a thing, or will the hype just fade away? Your take?

You know, it doesnt seem like much. But, when your running a deck that builds your creatures up in everyway possible, those +1 start to add up a vicous bit! Sooo. ultimately i think it depends on what your trying to do, and how many people also want to do that. if its not a popular deck idea. I dont think it'll stay around for long

An "exalted deck" requires that you overextend. Thus, an "exalted deck" is a **** one. Note that of the thirty-one cards with exalted that have been printed, only four of them have ever seen major play. Of those four, only one has been run solely because it had exalted. Ardent Plea was used in the Hypergenesis combo deck as a means to cascade into Hypergenesis. Qasali Pridemage continues to see play as a creature that can deal with artifacts and enchantments. Noble Hierarch is a mana-dork. Rafiq of the Many is the single card that was run solely for exalted. A short lived Standard deck featured him and countless mana-dorks in an effort to ramp into a single, game ending blow.

Soverigns of Lost Alara has exalted, and that whole deck was built around attacking with one dude.
Finest Hour also saw a large amount of play, because the card wins games on its own. And has Exalted.
Battlegrace Angel saw some play early on in Alara block standard.
The entire reason people play Noble Hierarch is because it has exalted. Otherwise people would run BoP.
Not saying I disagree with your actual point, but I thought it would be fair to point that out. I think Nefarox might be worth playing, because having an Edict effect every turn is really powerful.
SOME exalted cards are worth playing, but you should not value a creature's exalted ability as a garanteed +1/+1.

Worth noting is that people played (play) Birds of Paradise and Noble Hierarch in the same deck. If Noble Hierarch is played above Birds, it's very typically because they just don't need black or red mana. They're not running some five color pile and going "woah this exalted, bro!". Excluding some situations involving equipment and evasion, Noble Hierarch is just "strictly better" if you're not running black or red. It's the same vein for Llanowar Elves vs Birds of Paradise. If you're running mono-green elves, Llanowar Elves is "strictly better" than Birds of Paradise or Noble Hierarch (assuming you want to run Llanowar in the first place).
Also, "major play" was my criteria. Excluding that, I'm certain we could find a list featuring even Akrasan Squire .

"Criteria" is a plural word.
Every freaking deck in the format is overextending right now.
The exalted on Noble Hierarch is freaking amazing.
Every good card with exalted saw major play.
There are more good exalted cards in M13 than there were in the entirety of Alara block.
And finally, if you want to play exalted, put Sublime Archangel in a White swarm deck.

The Soverigns deck that put Eldrazi enchantments saw a decent amount of play. Heck if I can remember the name, but the whole deck revolved around dropping a Soverigns ASAP then swinging with a single dude. As did the Finest Hour decks.

its not that exalted the mechanic hasn't seen play, we all have a lot of examples of when it has. the point is that you shouldn't build a deck around the mechanic, simply play good cards that feature the keyword.
