I have an Arbor Elf and a Gavony Ironwright . I'm at 6 life.

My opponent casts a Bonfire of the Damned for X = 1.

Why does my elf live? Is it that static effects faster than SBE's?

Yes the continuous effect will save your elf. All damage is applied at the same time, as soon as you are at 5, the elf is 2/5 with one damage marked

Static effects are always in effect, so yes, they are "faster" than SBAs. They take no time at all to start applying.

Pretty much, yes. Continuous effects update... well, continuously. At the exact moment that your life drops to 5, gavony ironwright's effect "turns on", and alters the power and toughness of your other creatures. State-based actions on the other hand are checked frequently, but not continuously. Only after bonfire has finished resolving in its entirety and a player is about to get priority are state-based actions checked, at which point the elf has 5 toughness.
