I was going to make a BR control, that was just loaded on spot removal and sweepers and a few card draw and bombs. It seemed like it'd be really good in my head. Then I remembered bonfire was $40 and thundermaw was $30. Stupid naya.

Why do you need Bonfire in a BR control deck? You are in the 2 best colors for removal after all. Whipflare , Slagstorm , Black Sun's Zenith , Barter in Blood , heck even Blasphemous Act , Life's Finale and Magmaquake aren't that unreasonable. Plus you have access to all kinds of spot removal. The damage to the face from bonfire shouldn't be all that relevant in a control deck.

if you yourself were playing a bunch of value creatures like ravenous rats, skinrender, or thing likes vampire nighthawk or.... some sort of red creature, then bonfire would start to look pretty appealing.
really depends on the build. sometimes bonfire is appropriate, sometimes it isn't.
If you're playing Rats, Skinrender, Nighthawk and Bonfire, then I start to question whether you're actually a control deck, or just a midrange deck. You can play a controlling sub-plan in midrange, but I wouldn't call that "playing control."
Grixis is where you need to be for control. I do agree that Slagstorm and Whipflare are very legit right now, and being in red for Pillar is utterly necessary. You still have 3-4 Go for the Throat etc. for Silverheart et al., you get Combust out of the board, blah blah. Think Twice is still solid advantage, still think Alchemy is bonkers.
There are also still some pretty hot options for finishers. I keep pushing Lone Revenant. You can keep the board clear for it relatively easily, and it's hexproof, so they can't just Conscript it and kill you. Sphinx, Inferno and Gravy are hot, but obviously more susceptible to getting jacked.
Also, as much as I feel dirty for saying it, you could just play miracle control... the deck actually does work.
Welcome to 2012. Blue has the most efficient creatures, black has the all-in monocolored aggro deck, the most controlling deck in the format is green-red, control decks lose to aggro in attrition wars, and counterspells aren't an answer to fatties.
Pack Rat is like Bitterblossom and Tarmogoyf had a black baby.

Getting a grave Titan stolen isn't really ever a big deal. It just gives them some chump blockers. An don't forget Olivia.

I'd like Olivia a lot more if it wasn't for Vapor Snag. The same goes for Bloodline Keeper . Also, anyone think Staff of Nin is wildly underrated? My inner Cuneo wants to play a deck with all removal and 3 staffs for that oppressive "I hate magic!" endgame for my opponent. Throw some Karn or a Nephalia or two in and you have one annoying mother of a deck. It probably gets blown out by Ancient Grudge, but I want to try it.

Delver is still around. Olivia is good against their dudes, but I think she's too soft to Snag and too slow against other matchups to be played right now.
Given that Naya is the new hotness, I think being susceptible to Ancient Grudge is a pretty dubious idea.
Heartless, having Gravy stolen is less back-breaking than something like Sphinx or Wurmcoil, but in situations when they still have undead Strangleroots, Rancor'd Birds and Resto Angels bashing at your head, having your own 6/6 with it's 3/3 commandant to must-block is no bueno. As long as you have the option of playing a mechanic as derpy as hexproof on a big dude as insane as Revenant, might as well use it.
That said, when even sweepers aren't getting you value, I just don't think you should be trying control.

When sweepers aren't getting people value, I think we shouldn't bother playing standard. But no, I will continue playing control even if it means getting my face beat in(which it does) because magic is first and foremost a game and games are meant to be fun.

Staff of Nin has been amazing every time I've resolved it in any match up as long as I haven't let the game get out of hand.
Boasts?

Same here. It plays so well with Curse of Death's Hold, it's almost goofy. And if aggro players are boarding in a ton of artifact and enchantment hate against me, that's cool. Less stuff beating in my head.
It's like a Chandra, the Firebrand that doesn't suck combined with a Jace Beleren that can't be attacked by creatures or Snags and never runs out of loyalty. I'll invest 6 mana in that.
Not trying to push the thread into too much of a tangent, but I really think this is one of the premier control cards right now.
