suppose i'm at 1 life, have 9 poison counters, and an empty library; but i also control a laboratory maniac . now my opponent casts caress of phyrexia on me. what happens?

Caress of Phyrexia applies the actions in the order written, so you draw first and because of that win

Caress of Phyrexia applies the actions in the order written, so you draw first and because of that win
While its true that you follow the actions in the order written, you would still win if it applied the actions in reverse order.
First you'd go to 12 poison counters, then -2 life, then you'd try to draw from an empty library and win instead.
You don't lose the game until state-based actions are checked, and they won't be checked until after the caress resolves, but you win while it's resolving.

No. State based actions happen simultaneously.
