its true.  if you're ever in a position where you're not learning in this game, then you're doing something wrong.  never assume you know anything, because there are always players or situations that WILL prove you wrong.  ALWAYS.

This^^

Even the best of the best run into something from time to time that just makes them go "huh"

What seperates them from the average players is that afterwords they ask "hey, how/why did that happen".

One of my first decks that I posted here ran all 5 of the alara blade cycle as 4 ofs and knight of new alara x4.  Oh god, that was horrible...

It was revealed to me in a dream.  All the cards were in my dream except for three slots which I plugged in as Vault Skirge.

FULL DISCLOSURE:  The dream was post AVR so there was a copy of Slayer's Stronghold.  I decided to keep it pre AVR in my post here.

EDIT: I just remembered.  The Skirges might have been 2x Whipflare and 1x something else, probably War and Peace.

EDIT2:  Currently 4-0 in my first four games with this.  My opponents have been very angry.  I fought off a Wurmcoil from Grixis for six turns before I found my second Dispatch.  Jeez, I can do a lot of damage.

EDIT3: Streak broken.  Lost to an unexpected Overrun.    Cracking a Shrine for 10 wasn't enough.

also, I've been playtesting this deck in my sleep today

Ah, how this thread hath turned into a veritable font of wisdom and nostalgia.  Yeah, I played mono green elves around ZEN time when I started playing again.  Having not played since Onslaught was pretty nuts.

But it's true, there's so much info to soak up and interpret in this game.  A lot is logic, a lot is experience.  Fun stuff.

Welcome to 2012.  Blue has the most efficient creatures, black has the all-in monocolored aggro deck, the most controlling deck in the format is green-red, control decks lose to aggro in attrition wars, and counterspells aren't an answer to fatties.

I'd like to ironically ammend this statement. Always remember that Magic: The Theory is conjecture, and that while what you learn is valid, if you become inflexible, you will easily be punished. I don't think it's as black and white as right and wrong, but if your concepts of the game are unwilling to expand or give slack, you'll never be able to have a real grasp on what is going on. Please pardon my borderline-OCD taking it's toll on your prolific statement though.

The best example of this I've seen is with deck archetyping- something that exists for the sake of conjecture and basis for designing decks- But some players take truisms to heart about what they want to play- this is especially true of players who are trying to learn to play the control role, or people who enter the game with the "competitive mindset" trying to learn beats. Similarly, salted players have certain ideas about specific deck archetypes and are often too staunch for their own good, but a good player will admit when they overthought or became inflexible.

Mono-black control got top 8 last week, I'd say that comes pretty close to a pile of crap.

I can't find it. Which top 8?

S1AL:  I'm not sure whether to be offended or just glad that you're back.  Anyways, I was using a hyperbole there.

:D Funny story... turns out that, after spending like 9 months mostly getting out of Magic, I move to Wyoming and find out someone opened a nearby game store literally the same week. So yeah, I'm playing again. And planning to find a way to exploit the metagame in Denver again.

It got 8th place at a recent SCG Open. And yeah, I get that most people 'round here consider SCGO's aren't really worth mention, I do.

That said, as for my first forum post, I think it was help for RAV block limited, because that was got me into competetive magic. And it turns out I was wrong about a lot of stuff I thought was good.

SCGOs don't reflect what's good, but they reflect what people are playing.

So the only tournaments that reflect what's good are... gp's and pt's?
