I think voting could work in a contest in the future, it just needs a better system. I would go it by having everyone vote on 3 cards, the first one will get 3 points; the second one would get 2; and the third vote would only get 1. Also have a requirement that they must give a review of the cards they voted for, possibly with a minimum of 3 lines. If any cards weren't voted for then you could grade them (if everyone gets to vote 3 times then that's not as likely though).

Even though this contest didn't turn out that good, the idea was good anyway (and it was still better than the Eight of Swords contest).
