Ah mono-black control. The potential is wonderous, yet it remains just out of reach.

Problem is, so many of the cards are four drops!

Whenever we die to a mutilating effect powered by raw Black mana, we all look like beatific cherubs. Oh yes.

"Innocent, unbiased observation is a myth." --- P.B. Medawar (1969)

"Ever since man first left his cave and met a stranger with a different language and a new way of looking at things, the human race has had a dream: to kill him, so we don't have to learn his language or his new way of looking at things." --- Zapp Brannigan (Beast With a Billion Backs)

Forgive me because I've only been back into playing for < a year now, but how long have non-basic lands that produce black mana counted as swamps?

They don't.

Watery Grave and lands like it are unique in that they are nonbasic lands with basic land types. (Its typeline reads Land - Island Swamp.)
