Hi, I recently gotten into an argument with a friend over what does Grafdigger's Cage actually block or doesn't. He claims that Grafdigger's Cage blocks every single permanent that Genesis Wave puts into play, but I maintained that apart from the creatures which are very clearly blocked, everything else can enter play. The issue lies in whether "putting cards into play from the library or graveyard" is the same as "casting a spell from the library or graveyard". Does Grafdigger's Cage completely stop Genesis Wave and similar cards like Warp World from putting non-creature permanents into play? And on the same note, does Grafdigger's Cage stop you playing a land from the top of your library using Oracle of Mul Daya or Future Sight ? Thank you.

Casting a card is very different from putting it onto the battlefield, so Grafdigger's Cage won't completely stop Genesis Wave . Oracle of Mul Daya works fine. Future Sight can still get lands, but you'd have to cast anything else, and that's not allowed by the cage.

You are correct, spells like genesis wave and warp world simply put cards from the library onto the battlefield. The cards in the library are not actually cast, so non-creature permanents can enter the battlefield this way.
Now as for the oracle of mul daya, you will have no problem playing lands from the library since they are not cast. The same is also true for future sight, however future sight allows you to play lands or cast spells from the top of the library. So while you can play lands, since grafdigger's cage states the spells can not be cast from the library other cards can not be cast that way using future sight.

You are correct. The Cage does not stop non-creatures from entering the battlefield from the library.

No spells are being cast. A spell cast from the library would be something like Panglacial Wurm 's ability.

"Put into play" doesn't exist anymore. It got renamed to "Put onto the battlefield" to highligh the fact that it has nothing to do with playing a card.
While the desired result of playing a permanent card is to put it onto the battlefield, they're not the same thing.

The Cage blocks getting Creatures via Genesis the Wave, but nothing else. Only Creatures.

Plus we dont even "play" creature spells anymore - we "cast" them.

That makes no sense to me.
If they spelled the ability out on the card in full then it would not be allowed in a mono-black Commander deck, but because they used a keyword to save space it is allowed?

Yup, just like you can have Birds of paradise in a mono green deck but not Noble Hierarch . YAY COLOR IDENTITY
Is algebra really that difficult?
Survey says yes.
You want to make a milky drink. You squeeze a cow.
I love this description. Like the cows are sponges filled with milk. I can see it all Nick Parks claymation-style with the cow's eyes bugging out momentarily as a giant farmer squeezes it like a squeaky dog toy, and milk shoots out of it.

Yes and no. The "play a card" action still exists, and you can use it to cast a creature spell.

The "play a card" instruction still exists, so I'm not sure what your point it.
"Play a card" is only used when there is a chance that the card could be a land instead of a spell.
My point was that tht have made 2 changes to the terminology to make things clearer, not just 1.
