Possibly a real simple question, I was wondering and got a few arguements with one of my friends almost everytime he gets his Koth of the Hammer on the field.  His "+1: Untap target Mountain. It becomes a 4/4 red Elemental creature until end of turn. It's still a land."  I was wondering if this 4/4 creature can attack the turn it's placed on the field, I always argue that it would need haste to attack.

If anyone can answer this it would be much appreciated.

-Thanks! Laughing

It depends on how long the mountain has been on the battlefield.  If you just played the mountain this turn, no it can not attack.  If you have controlled it since the turn began, yes it can attack.

How long it has been a creature is not relevant.

Koth of the Hammer doesn't put any creature onto the battlefiield, it turns a Mountain into a creature. If the Mountain has been under your control since the beginning of the turn, t can attack now that it's a creature.

The Mountain that is turned into a creature is now subject to the summoning sickness rule, so if THAT mountain only entered the battlefield that turn, then it won't be able to attack (or tap for mana) that turn. If he chooses a Mountain that has been on the battlefield since the beginning of his turn, then summoning sickness doesn't apply.

Be aware that there is no "summoning" involved (even if summoning were still a game term). No new creature is entering the battlefield. The effect simply gives an existing permanent a new type.

If an Object - Creature or not - has been under your Control since teh beginning of teh Turn, it does not have Summoning Sickness. If it becomes a Creature later, it will be able to attack and use -ABilities etc.
