Add Miracle to that list.
I like Miracle but it doesn't scream "make more of me!" as much as soulbond.
I agree completely. I love Soulbond, and think it'll be a marquee returning mechanic of a core set in the semi-near future.
I also totally forgot to mention the mechanics of the big third set suffering the same fate as the mechanics that it scuttled. There are so many mechanics that never realized their full potential. I agree with JustTerrorIt, insofar as WotC not reusing good mechanics as often as they could/should.

I am usually thrilled the "big 3rds" and then sad because those are the sets that end up rotating quickly. Personally, I think big new mechanics should be fleshed out in the 1st and 2nd sets also because of more time/experimentation by us, all the good stuff that comes from more time, etc etc.
Decks I run Spoiler:
Show
I currently run a deck for Standard, Modern, Commander and Legacy. For standard, I have a typical, horribly budget Rakdos Deck Wins. For Modern, I have a very lovable mono-green, resistant to removal type of deck. For Legacy, I'm trying too hard to break Pyromancer Ascension . For Commander/EDH, I'm running The Mimeoplasm . A little morals thing about me, I like winning through combos, but not infinitely.
However quiet, I am a Christian, so feel free to tell me you are too, it's always a relief.Cheers!

I like 3X drafts more than XYZ draft, but I don't really care since I hardly get a chance to draft. Also leaves the second set in the dust, causing multiple small problems.
I also prefer drafting 3 packs of a set over three different sets. As for leaving a set in the dust, big third or no, it will happen. Maybe you're drafting AAA for 3 months, then BAA for 3 months, then CBA for three months and finally end up shy of cards from set C if you don't buy boosters or singles. Or you go AAA, BAA, CCC and end up short changed on set B.
If they could engineer it so that you were drafting BBA it wouldn't be so bad. (It is also what we were doing at my FLGS for house draft.)

As far as the mechanics part of this complaint, goes, I don't mind that we don't see the mechanics get all used up the first time around. If they use up all of the coolest ideas the first time a mechanic sees the light of day, then I'd imagine it would be an even longer period of time before we see that mechanic again, no matter how cool or fun it is. So, if they use, say, 80% of the cool possibilities right away, we'd have to wait a longer period of time for the game and meta to evolve before it's worth printing the mechanic again in a new, fresh way vs. if they only use, say 60% of the cool ideas up front. I'd love to see more flashback and miracle cards - they both are deep in design space. But I'm patient, and I know both of these will likely see print again once the game evolves enough for it to make sense for them to do so.

I don't like the large third set because like many have mentioned it changes the feel of the set's previous flavor yet tries to remain in that flavor with totally new mechanics. I like AVR and RoE is my favorite single set of all time, but I wish that they were the first set of a three set block, not a one and done. I feel that if you are going to introduce a mechanic you need to play it out through the whole set. It gives the set a more coherant feel and gives support to decks utilizing that mechanic.

Radiance Forecast Level up Clash Kinship Hellbent Ninjitsu Flanking Horsemanship Amplify Anihilator (I think I spelled that wrong) Persist
The large majority of mechanics are not fleshed out and abandoned, locked away, and never to be heard from again.
Flanking was originally in Mirage block but it was revisited and explored a little more in Time Spiral block. However, there's not so much interesting design space in that mechanig. Also there's two new Ninjutsu cards in Planechase 2012 edition. However that mechanic is limited by the name. They can't really just go and put creatures with that ability in a random set and have them feel like they belong. Horsemanship was just the Portal Three Kingdoms counterpart of flying. There's no point in making any of that mechanig outside that set as it's identical to flying and wouldn't make any sense anyway. Oh yeah, I hope they never reuse Soulbond. I hate that mechanic and I'll never play a single card with it outside limited.

Man, we couldn't be further apart on this one. Silverblade Paladin has been winning me FNMs for a couple of weeks now. Soulbond just feels right to me. I'm just disappointed that it's only going to be around for one set, at least for a long while.

I don't get this. Why can't a Ninja just show up anywhere in a world where planeswalking is common and dragons just show up where ever they please? And what about that block (I think it was Zendikar or New Mirrodin) that didn't have any goblins? In a fantasy world where odd and completely made up things happen, within the confines of a game called Magic, what's the problem with a ninja just showing up?
Nobody ever asks "How can Sarkhan make a dragon show up on any plane?" Why is there such a concern about ninjas being out of place? If Vampire Nighthawk were to rob Shinobi for his garb, we'd have a ninja right there in Zendikar.

Because by the lore, planeswalking isn't common. A planeswalker can show up wherever they want, but unless you have an active spark, you're not leaving your home plane.
EDIT: Or are pulled from it by a planeswalker.

It felt reasonable with ROE. ZEN's theme was an easy one to watch go overboard, so I was fine with their abandonment, epsecially since they found a good way to do it. AVR doesn't make much sense with the block in that regard. The previous themes had tons of space to explore and AVR doesn't provide a great interplay with them. It feels a lot like they fed off the success of ROE and made this move earlier than they should have, which just leaves this block flat in the end.
