Not sure if ya'll already knew or not but I just looked at the spoiler and saw Door to Nothingness making a comeback in m13. I'm excited, just thought I'd share, haha.

The more complicated the plumbing, the easier it is to stop it up.
Fair enough. Its hard to evaluate something that requires as many pieces as door does, and those selections stood out.

Ok so I have usurped the power this time for a challenge that I want to put forward to everyone. Build me a modern deck that uses descent into madness as part if it's primary win condition. I'm not bothered about a sideboard but you will be judged on creativeness and reliability. I will begin judging on the morning (UK time) of next Thursday, results should be up that evening at the latest. I think that that is all you need to know, feel free to ask me on here or message if you need anything else.

Better question, what does Nicol Bolas want with the lightbulb?

I feel I should point out that I have not requested modern for tournament reasons, I simply prefer the way that the cards look. What can I say? I'm shallow

So we are limited to modern for card choices then?

Here's my first draft, I may come back and make some minor changes. It's pretty clear how I wanted to use Descent - total resource denial. The hard part was deciding between red or green as a second color, or trying to fit in all 3. Here's what I came up with. 3 x Descent into Madness 2 x Mimic Vat 3 x Liliana of the Veil 3 x Thoughtseize 2 x Blightning 4 x Lightning Bolt 3 x Molten Rain 4 x Ravenous Rats 2 x Nezumi Shortfang 2 x Sanity Gnawers 2 x Hellhole Rats 3 x Avalanche Riders 2 x Solemn Simulacrum 1 x Marrow-Gnawer 4 x Blood Crypt 10 x Swamp 10 x Mountain I have creatures that act as resource denial and stay on the board to exile with Descent, lots of discard and destruction, and awesome Mimic Vat shenanigans. Landing a Descent is the final nail in the coffin, I will be way ahead in resources by that time. They will soon be exiling whatever they have left, while I can ditch excess lands and swing away. If they do have some defense up and choose to get rid of their hand, Nezumi Shortfang eats away their life for free. Marrow-Gnawer makes the rat subtheme a viable win condition after I've removed all answers, as well as making an army of expendable tokens for Descent fodder.

Wow that was hard. I went through 2 previous iterations/ideas before I got to this. This deck is probably jank, but it's more doable than the other versions. Personally I'm proud I found the Selective Memory x Misthollow Griffin combo. I also like that I can use Helvault to "rescue" a griffin from a kill spell. XD Moorland Haunt is the only reason I splash white and is also there to "rescue" a downed griffin. The 'walkers are there mostly to draw me cards. Everything else is filling their typical roles. so no explanation really needed there. Oh and one more piece of synergy in that the Descent can exile the Helvault so the opponent's creatures never come back. =D I realize that playing a low-permanent count for a descent deck is counterproductive, but there just aren't enough creatures I feel like playing and have it still feel like a descent deck. Insane GriffinsCreatures (4) 4x Misthollow Griffin Non-creatures (28) 4x Mana Leak 4x Dissipate 4x Forbidden Alchemy 2x Helvault 2x Diabolic Tutor 4x Selective Memory 4x Damnation 4x Descent into Madness Planeswalkers (4) 2x Jace Beleren 2x Tamiyo, the Moon Sage Lands (24) 4x Moorland Haunt 4x Arcane Sanctum 4x Drowned Catacomb 4x Darkslick Shores 6x Island 2x Swamp I'm not invested enough in this to bother with a sideboard.
******************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************** From Mark Rosewater's Tumblr: the0uroboros asked: How in the same set can we have a hexproof, unsacrificable(not a word) creature AND a land that makes it uncounterable. How does this lead to interactive play? I believe I’m able to play my creature and you have to deal with it is much more interactive than you counter my creature. ******************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************** Post #777

So far every idea I have involves cards outside of Modern This deck wants Ichorid , since it dodges Descent. If I can't come up with anything else, I'll post my completely illegal deck just for luls. Ok, here's something that is probably really, really awful. Enchantments 3 x Descent into Madness Resource Control 4 x Liliana of the Veil 2 x Barter in Blood 3 x Thoughtseize 3 x Sign In Blood 2 x Death Cloud The Fun Part 4 x Bloodghast 4 x Vengevine 4 x Memnite 3 x Stinkweed Imp 4 x Golgari Thug 1 x Tombstalker Land 3 x Dakmor Salvage 2 x Crypt of Agadeem 12 x Swamp 4 x Overgrown Tomb 2 x Woodland Cemetery So, what's the plan here? Well, Liliana and Death Cloud both provide "symmetrical" discard, removing your opponent's hand, creatures, and land, making the impending Descent into Madness more impactful as soon as it comes into play. Meanwhile, you're discarding your win conditions, putting them in the only place they are safe from Descent: the graveyard. Once descent is online, it should only take a turn or two (if you keep harassing them after the fact) before they are sitting on no hand and no lands. You can start using your dredgers to fill your graveyard with goodies. Memnites, cheap creatures (like golgari thug), and crypt of agadeem should let you play two creatures in one turn, snagging 4 vengevines and smashing face. Dakmor salvage also lets you recur your bloodghasts free of charge, so you can beat face early, sac your creatures to barter and death cloud worry free, and then cast them even if you have no lands! Even if you dredge all your Descents or just never draw it, the Bloodghast/Vengvine engine should prove devestating enough, often putting hasty leathal damage on the board in one or two turns. So yeah. This was hard.

*Bump* Because I posted in my old post instead of a new one, and this should make it easier for our judge to find it.
