Todays random card is... Underground River Ah such fond memories. The original painlands. I still think they are good today but I do understand why Wizards wanted to go a different route. And in all honesty after thinking about it for a while I don't want them to get printed again. Discuss!

Made sense back in the days, now they're outdated.

I prefer painlands - make people pay for versatility. I'd love to see these become the Standard dual land, rather than what we currently have. At the very least, games would go that much faster! This is another example of how WotC is diverging from classical stories about magic - power comes at a cost and is liable to backfire. Sure, Black spells often have a prohibitive additional cost, but I miss the cards and abilities that were effectively two-edged (or more) swords. Cards that affected ALL creatures of a certain type or color ( Elvish Champion , Bad Moon ) and anything with shroud. Running these made a player careful... as did mana burn. All this "benefit the caster only" flies in the face of traditional fantasy. Hexproof, creatures you control... grumble, grumble. Good wine today. Cheers!

The only thing that could make it better would be to tweak the text to add land types and maintain functionality.

No, they are still some of the most servicable dual lands out there.

With the exceptions of Arid Mesa and such, there haven't been much painlands in recent sets. Even in this case, they only let you search for a land for 1 life, not add mana.

They're still effective but don't fit in today's vision of the game.
They only really brought back cost for power in Innistrad after letting it lose for a while. That's why they made sense back in the days but not as much now.

Arid Mesa isn't a Painland, it's a Fetchland. The good thing about Fetches is that they can get you a basic that provides either color, or tutor out a Dual Land , Shock Land , or something wacky .
Indeed, my bad.
Oh I know what they do, I use Bad River , Flood Plain , Mountain valley , GrassLands and Rocky Tar pit to get Underground Sea , Plateau , Taiga and such but these day the most common cost for lands that produces multi-colors is entering the field tapped and the cost isn't based on use but only once.
Vec Townships type of cost for multi-colors isn't quite something we'll see again anytime soon. That's what I meant in my first post.

Depletion Lands. They were never popular.
