this is why Magic loves it's shortcuts so much, plenty of its rules hinge on how things are worded. makes you wonder if the "legal department" is also known as R&D :P

They are treated as whatever the trigger/replacement says they are treated as. Phytohydra's replacement initially ignores the "deals damage to player" part for the same reason it ignores card draws.
