I wasn't even AROUND for Fallen Empires, but that and The Dark have always been among my absolute favorite sets, just because of the flavor. I'm not sure many blocks have matched them since. Possibly just Ravnica, Mirage, Innistrad... only a handful.
I do remember my one friend buying a booster pack of Fallen Empires just for fun when we were first starting out (around Odyssey). He went through the cards (eight--he was expecting fifteen, the poor guy) and at the end, in a bit of a daze, remarked: "No wonder they fell..."

Despite this troll post, Fallen Empires was a good, and popular set when first released, it just hasn't aged well.
I think you meant to say Hymn to Tourach .
You can't justify a set with a single decent card. You may as well argue that Homelands was good because it had Serrated Arrows (one of less than 3 remotely playable cards in the entire set, and it's not even THAT good.)

No, Homelands was good because it had a respectful power level. Nothing was ruined by Homelands, nor obsoleted. As for what Tanuki Mario was saying, he was basically saying that the whole of Fallen Empires sucked except for one card. Dunno what you're going on about... Homelands had two of the best creatures in the game at the time. @KeeperofManyNames: I consider the "silver age" of The Dark-Alliances to be the best of times for Magic cards. Really wish they'd kept to the design philosophies behind those sets. I don't have a better time than when I'm running some Tresserhorn vs. Kjeldor decks or what have you. @Wynzerman: Glad you like it.

What were the alleged best creatures in the game at the time?

Autumn Willow and Ihsan's Shade . They were awesome on top of being sexy. Too bad they don't uphold a flavor=power level metric anymore...

Man, I love how most of the flavor text from Homelands comes from people saying things about their enemies. It's a really fascinating dynamic that we haven't really seen anywhere else in such full force, and it does a lot for the theme of a steadily escalating conflict... Yeah, I have to agree, there's a lot of cool stuff back in the Silver Age, if you just see past power levels to the many, many other aspects of a set. Neo Mint, have you seen the Illustrated, Annotated Homelands Document? I feel like you would appreciate it. It's something we put together a while ago for the Expanded Multiverse project from original sources within WotC from that period... I wish more people would read through it. It's a damn cool piece of Magic's history, and it really explains the flavor behind a lot of cards.

Yup, only Homelands could wreck Homelands Apocalypse Chime . Even if it is somewhat ridiculous I miss that kind of cards.
My decks, mostly casuals, but some I use online with some small changes:

They really oughta make a card that destroys all cards printed past 1996 with a card like that. It'd do a nice job obsoleting the obsolescence nicely.
