im a newbie and i need some cards worth playing. i started out thinking i could get away cheap by getting a big lot of cards off ebay. i guess it kinda helped, i got 1000 cards for 20 bucks. i've got the 2 dark ascension event decks, the koth vs. vensur decks, like 15 bunch of dark ascension boosters and a couple innistrad. after messing around with different colors/builds, it just seems like the majority collection sucks pretty bad to where its hard to build something fun. (fun to me is having a decent playable strategical deck working towards one gameplan and common goal). . how should i fix this? should i try the deckbuilder's toolkit? ive had different opinions on that, but im considering it now. its cheap and its a bunch of fresh cards to play with. should i just forget the toolkit and buy singles online for specific decks? are there any alternatives? maybe ill just go out and buy a few toolkits and a avacyn restored fatpack. because im buying for me and my little brother.

If you want to play at tournaments you will probably need the expensive cards if you aim for legacy or vintage. If you go for standard you must expect to either trade or buy the best each time a new set comes out, then trade with some legacy players to get rid of the cards that rotate out.
If you intent to play magic mostly at home you will have to pay attention to what your friends play, then take a look at what you got and build towards something that can take them. Do not limit yourself to any colors but play everything you can fit together!
In the case of legacy, start out with white/blue cards. Best card for you to buy is 4 force of will. Play between 12 to 16 creatures, have some swords to plowshares, wrath of god and daze and brainstorm, that should be the essence of such a deck. If you have the cash try to get 4 stoneforge mystic and 1-2 batterskull.

what are you trying to build?
casual, kitchen table stuff?
standard?
legacy?
commander/edh?
what do you like to play? control? aggro?
answer those questions. then pick cards that you have that sort of fit that theme and google the card with "mtg standard" and you should find some decks
and then you can buy singletons which i find to be the most cost effective either online at auction sites, or online game stores, or go to your local game store and buy some there, or meet other players and trade for needed cards with them
